Why Khalil Mack Chose the Chargers Again in Free Agency

The Chargers on Saturday agreed on a contract extension with Mack as the future Hall of Famer returns in free agency

Khalil Mack is running it back in powder blue.

The Chargers on Saturday announced they have agreed on a contract extension with Mack, a veteran edge rusher who turned 35 last month.

Mack was set to become an unrestricted free agent when the 2026 NFL New League Year began Wednesday at 1 p.m. (PT).

But the Chargers — for the second year in a row — made Mack a high priority in free agency to ensure the future Hall of Famer didn't land with another team.

A year ago, Mack said he was weighing his options between retirement and coming back for a 12th season. He ended up signing a 1-year deal with the Bolts in free agency.

Mack's tone was a tad different after the conclusion of the 2025 season. While he said he'd still mull retirement a bit, he seemed more open to returning for Year 13.

But was it going to be with the Chargers?

Mack, a nine-time Pro Bowler, answered that with a resounding yes with this new extension, more proof that he believes in the direction the Chargers are heading under General Manager Joe Hortiz, Head Coach Jim Harbaugh and quarterback Justin Herbert.

Plus, Mack likely has some fire in his belly after another early playoff exit and after he didn't get the chance to play a full season in 2025.

Mack suffered an elbow injury in Week 2 that sidelined him for four games. He still finished with 5.5 sacks, a number that pushed him to 113.0 for his career. Mack currently ranks seventh among active players with that total.

"It was frustrating. But it's not what happens to you, it's how you handle it," Mack said. "I just tackled every week like we were playing the Super Bowl and I had to get back.

"That kind of helped my momentum and grind and speed through the process even though it was a gruesome injury," Mack added. "It kept me on point to hurry up and get back to full strength."

The Los Angeles Chargers today agreed to terms on a contract extension with outside linebacker Khalil Mack. Outside Linebacker Khalil Mack recored 4 forced fumbles, 5.5 sacks, 6 tackles for loss, and 11 QB hits in the 2026 season.

Mack's return means a pillar of leadership and work ethic will remain on defense as the Bolts transition to a new defensive coordinator in Chris O'Leary.

Mack is perhaps the most respected player in the entire locker room, something he has earned from both his play and ability to guide young players along.

He had an hand in developing Tuli Tuipulotu's growth but also worked behind the scenes to encourage Tarheeb Still and others to put in the required work in the offseason.

And Mack isn't afraid to speak up when needed, just as he did on a short week in late October before a Thursday night home game against the Vikings.

With the Chargers sitting at 4-3, Mack lit a fire under the Bolts that inspired a dominating 37-10 win over Minnesota and sparked a streak of seven wins in eight games.

"When guys like that talk, everybody listens," Tuipulotu said. "Especially if he's not the type to talk a lot, whenever he talks everybody listens.

"We all buy into what he says because he's done great things in this league," Tuipulotu added. "He knows what needs to be done."

As Mack enters Year 13, it's clear that he's taking his career on a year-by-year basis at this point. But it's worth pointing out that he's now going into Year 5 in Southern California, longer than any of his previous NFL stops.

By returning to the Chargers, he is signaling that believes his best chance to win is with the Bolts.

Now it's up to Mack to help lead the way to accomplish those goals, which surely includes elusive playoff success.

And it's up to the Chargers to keep making shrewd moves in free agency ahead of the 2026 season.
