5 Takeaways: How the Chargers Dominated the Rival Raiders for Week 13 Win

ChargersRaidersHerbert

The Chargers are 8-4 after Sunday's 31-14 home win over the Raiders.

Here are five takeaways from Week 13.

1. Bolts get back on track

The Chargers earned their eighth win Sunday but the biggest storyline from Week 13 is that Justin Herbert will undergo surgery on Monday after suffering a broken bone in his non-throwing hand.

Herbert left the game for half a series before coming back in with a hard cast and a glove on his left hand.

"He's as tough as they come," said Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. "Taped it up, glove and played a great game."

So, too, did the Chargers, who overcame a sluggish first half to dominate the Raiders in the second half on the way to another double-digit win against their division rivals.

The Bolts — who bounced back from a Week 11 loss — looked refreshed as they secured a second straight season sweep of Las Vegas under Harbaugh.

"It's hard beating any team twice in this league, especially professionals," Derwin James,. Jr. said.

He later added: "We were all licking our chops just to be back from the bye. We didn't make it about the team we were playing, we all love football. We were licking our chops to be back on the grass, especially after a tough loss. Just to get that off our books and come back and work harder."

Tuli Tuipulotu added: "We came out here swinging today and I'm proud of the guys."

The Chargers outgained the Raiders 341 to 156 in total yards and held the ball for 35 minutes and 48 seconds, 11-plus more minutes than Las Vegas had in time of possession.

The Bolts now sit at 8-4 and moved to a perfect 4-0 against division foes this season while also keeping hold of a coveted playoff spot in the AFC. The Chargers are also an impressive 7-2 in conference play.

The Chargers are currently the No. 5 seed as a Wild Card team ahead of the Colts (No. 6 seed) and Bills (No. 7 seed), both of whom are also 8-4. The Chargers 7-2 in conference play gives them the current tiebreaker ahead of Indianapolis (6-3) and Buffalo (5-3).

"It's big time. There were a lot of 7-4 teams [entering Sunday] so it's just continuing to stack wins," Jamaree Salyer said. "This stuff helps us out at the end, continuing to get those [division] wins."

While all eyes will be on Herbert's status for the week ahead, the Chargers will now turn their attention to a Week 14 primetime home game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.

"We're going to have to do it again next week, and the week after that and the week after that," Harbaugh said. "But I love the way our team responded."

2. Tuipulotu sets career sack mark

Make it a new career best for Tuli Tuipulotu.

Tuipulotu notched 2.0 sacks Sunday to reach 10.0 on the season, setting a new single-season mark for the Chargers third-year edge rusher.

The 23-year-old's teammates were fired up for him to hit the milestone.

"I was keeping track the whole year for him," James said. "He's finally in double digits, I'm so happy for him."

Khalil Mack added: "I expected it from him this year. The guy has been working hard. When you see how he works day-in and day-out, it's the expectation. The expectation now moving forward is to capitalize on it and get to 17, 18, 19."

Tuipulotu's response? Meh.

"It's not enough. I feel like there's a lot more out there," Tuipulotu said.

Both of Tuipulotu's sacks came on third downs, but he showed up in the run game, too, with a key fourth-and-1 run stop on Ashton Jeanty late in the third quarter.

"I knew they were going to down block," Tuipulotu said. "I knew the tight end that was on me was going to try to wash me down because they were in the same formation the play before. Just try to make a play."

All in all, Tuipulotu notched 4.0 tackles for loss and had a pass defensed to lead the charge on a day where the Bolts defense got to Geno Smith a half dozen times.

"Man, we just went out there and played hard. It ain't nothing new or nothing different," Tuipulotu said. "We saw what the Browns did to them last week [with 10 sacks] and we wanted to take advantage of their O-line. No disrespect to them though."

With five games left, Tuipulotu will need to stay hot in order to challenge the Chargers single-season sack record of 17, a mark shared by Mack, Shawne Merriman and Leslie O'Neal.

Bud Dupree offered a glowing endorsement that Tuipulotu could potentially get there.

"Let me tell you something about Tuli. He's one of the hardest workers I've ever seen or been around," Dupree said. "Anytime you get 10 sacks in this league, that's not to be taken for granted because of his hard work and dedication.

"It doesn't go unnoticed with the amount of work he puts in and the questions he asks," Dupree added. "Us older guys, he's still asking questions even though he has more sacks than us. He's always trying to find ways to get better and he's one of those guys you know is going to be around for awhile."

3. Vidal continues to shine

Another week, another career day for Kimani Vidal.

Actually...

"He's having a career year," Salyer said.

The second-year running back put together another productive performance of 126 yards rushing on 25 attempts, topping his career mark of 124 he set in Week 6.

Vidal also scored a touchdown in the win, setting the tone after halftime with the 59-yard run.

It was his fourth game this season with at least 100 scrimmage yards and a score after not having any prior to assuming more responsibilities in Week 6.

After starting the year on the practice squad, Vidal once again continues to make the most of his opportunities.

"I've always felt very confident that I could play in this league at a high level," Vidal said after the game.

He later added: "Whatever comes my way, I'm just trying to do my best."

Vidal gave the Chargers offense a boost in the ground game early and often, but none bigger than his big run on the first drive of the second half.

Facing a third-and 2 on his own 41-yard line, Vidal got the ball to the left side with Salyer leading the way in front of him.

And after the offensive lineman and wide receiver Tre' Harris opened the lane, the running back made one more defender miss to give the Chargers a lead they never relinquished.

"I knew Tre' was going to make his block, he has all season," Vidal said. "I set Jamaree up and it was a 1-on-1 situation.

"I was just running," he added.

The career-long run was the longest rushing touchdown by a Chargers player since late in the 2022 season and brought incredible momentum to the team coming out of the half.

Whether it's breaking long runs or getting the tough yards, Vidal has impressed in all ways.

"It was a huge day for Kimani ... gave us a huge spark – one of the great runs and he did that all game," Harbaugh said. "He was really good in protection as well."

Salyer added: "He's insane. It's very difficult to knock him back because he's so low. He runs hard and he makes us right a lot of times. We leave one unblocked and he going for four or five extra yards. He's rolling back there."

With Omarion Hampton likely to return soon having returned to practice last week, the Chargers backfield will have some dynamic options.

Considering the level Vidal is playing at and what Hampton showed before the injury, there's a buzz around what that combo could be heading into December and beyond.

"It feels great," Vidal said. "I'm pretty certain Coach [Greg Roman] and Coach [Kiel McDonald] have all the confidence in us. We just want to prove him right."

Salyer added: "I'm excited to see him and Omarion be that 1-2 [punch]. Thunder and lightning, it's going to be nice."

4. Run defense shows up

Perhaps the biggest focal point heading into Sunday's game was the Bolts run defense against the Raiders rushing attack.

The Chargers were coming off a game where they allowed a season-high 192 rushing yards and were ticked off about their effort.

Las Vegas, meanwhile, changed offensive coordinators and Head Coach Pete Carroll spoke about wanting to rely on the run game more.

The advantage on Sunday clearly went to the Chargers, who allowed just a season-low 31 rushing yards on 18 carries.

"The response is the response," Mack said. "You have to respond with actions, I think we played a lot more physical at the line of scrimmage, we played a lot more physical with hands and just smart technique-wise up front.

"Everything was falling into place, but it's still room to get better," Mack added. "That's what we're going to attack this week."

Jeanty, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, had 31 rushing yards on 15 attempts.

Harbaugh credited Chargers Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter for making some scheme adjustments during the bye week to help shore up that group.

"Another really good game by Jesse. I mean, I thought those adjustments, those tighter coverages, we were really going for that," Harbaugh said. "It just changes some of the looks and it was very beneficial today."

5. New-look OL

The Chargers rolled out their eighth offensive line combination of the season as Salyer got the nod at left tackle.

And the unit as a whole put together a good bounce back performance that they were looking for from left to right.

"The whole offensive line – I thought Jamaree had a great game – touchdown block," Harbaugh said. "He was out there sprinting for Kimani Vidal, but his play in particular? Really good, really good.

"Same with Mekhi Becton, Zion Johnson, Bradley Bozeman, Trey Pipkins [III], [there's] going to be a game ball for all of them," he later added. "That's how good I thought they played."

With Salyer in particular, it was his first start at left tackle since his rookie season when he started in place of Rashawn Slater.

The fourth-year offensive lineman filled in at that spot in Week 9 after Joe Alt left the game and had been primarily at the guard position.

But kicking out back to tackle felt as natural as ever.

"Just like riding a back, getting back out there and taking the training wheels off," Salyer said about playing at left tackle. "I thought I had a good week of practice and I watched a lot of film.

"I just wanted to make the guys I was stepping in for proud of me," Salyer added. "Joe and Rashawn, they obviously are really great players but I just wanted to make the team proud."

Herbert added: "I think Jamaree's done such a great job, whether it's at guard or whether it's at tackle. To have a guy like that who has been around a few years and is a very veteran, smart player, I think it made a difference today.

The offensive line was a difference maker in the game as the Bolts were able to give Herbert some time but especially run the ball and control the game clock.

The team ran it 43 times for 192 yards, tied for the most carries and second-most rush yards in a game this season. It was also the first game the unit had multiple rushing scores this season.

"They were getting after it today [in the run game]," Vidal said. "You can tell they were fresh and feeling good."

Harbaugh said during the week that he hoped to solidify the unit heading into the final stretch of the season, and Sunday's win was a good start to get there.

"That was the hope coming into this game that we would do that," Harbaugh said. "And step one is acquitting themselves great and get that thing solidified for this home stretch is huge."
