Chargers Outlast Bengals for Thrilling Primetime Win

Dobbins Recap

The Chargers are now 7-3 after a thrilling 34-27 win over the Bengals on Sunday Night Football.

Here is a game recap from Week 11.

First Quarter

Justin Herbert, Derwin James, Bradley Bozeman, Rashawn Slater and Josh Harris were the Chargers captains. The Bolts won the toss and elected to defer. The Chargers defense took the field first and forced a Bengals punt after rookie Cam Hart broke up Joe Burrow's third-down pass intended for Tee Higgins. The Bolts began at their own 10-yard line but went three-and-out on their opening possession. The Bengals drove into the red zone on their ensuing possession but the Chargers stood tall and limited Cincinnati to a field goal.

Down 3-0, Herbert got the Bolts going with a 20-yard run. Herbert then hit Ladd McConkey for 20 yards on another 20-yard play. Herbert then capped off the drive with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Will Dissly.

The Chargers led 7-3 at the end of the first quarter as the Bengals were inside the 30-yard line.

Second Quarter

The Chargers defense held firm in the red zone once again as the Bolts forced the Bengals to kick another short field goal. Herbert stayed locked in by hitting Quentin Johnston for 22 yards and Dissly for 20 yards before finding Johnston for a 26-yard touchdown pass. Herbert began his night completing all six passes for 123 yards, two scores and a perfect passer rating of 158.3.

The Chargers defense responded right away by forcing a three-and-out as Tuipulotu sacked Burrow on third down.

Herbert stayed hot as he scrambled for 30 yards before finding Derius Davis for 14 yards. The Bolts moved into the red zone and eventually faced fourth-and-goal at the 1 before J.K. Dobbins powered his way into the end zone for another Bolts touchdown.

Leading 21-6, the Chargers defense again got to Burrow on third down as Poona Ford notched a sack for the second straight week.

Herbert and the offense reached midfield before he scrambled for nine yards and another first down. The Bengals were called for a personal foul before the Bolts moved inside the 5-yard line. The Bolts kicked a field goal on the final play of the half to take a 24-6 lead into the half.

Third Quarter

The Bolts began with the ball but went three-and-out to open the half but the Bengals followed suit. The Chargers then added to their lead with a scoring drive that ended with a 53-yard field goal from Cameron Dicker. Cincinnati struck back with a touchdown drive as Burrow hit Ja'Marr Chase for a 4-yard pass. Up 27-13, the Bolts went three-and-out as the Bengals took over at midfield. Eli Apple had a pass breakup on third down to bring up fourth-and-2 at the 42 but Cincinnati hit a touchdown pass to pull within seven points. Leading 27-20, the Bolts put a drive together as Herbert hit McConkey for 18 yards to move the chains on third-and-4. Dobbins then moved the chains on his own with a 15-yard run as the quarter came to a close.

Fourth Quarter

The Chargers turned the ball over on the first play of the fourth quarter as Herbert fumbled just outside the red zone. The Bengals rallied to tie the game on a 71-yard touchdown drive that knotted the score at 27 with 12 minutes and 21 seconds left to go in regulation. Herbert hit Palmer for 12 yards to open the next drive but the Bolts were forced to punt after three straight incomplete passes. The Chargers appeared to grab momentum back with an interception from Alohi Gilman but the Chargers were called for roughing the passer. The game remained tied, however, after the Bengals missed a 48-yard field goal.

The Bolts couldn't sustain their ensuing drive as a third-down holding call negated a pass that would have moved the chains. The Chargers punted it away as the Bengals began on their own 21-yard line with 5:24 left in regulation. Cincinnati moved the chains once on the ground and twice through the air to get to the Bolts 35-yard line but the Bengals came up empty handed as they missed a 51-yard field goal. The Chargers got the ball back but threw three straight incompletions and punted the ball away, but the Bolts defense forced a punt of their own.

The Chargers took over at their own 16. Herbert hit McConkey for 28 yards to get to the 44 as the Bolts called a timeout. Herbert then found McConkey again for 27 yards to get out of bounds at the Bengals 29. Dobbins did the rest with a 29-yard touchdown run as the Chargers took a 34-27 lead with 18 seconds to go.

The Bolts hung on for the 34-27 win as Burrow's Hail Mary attempt was incomplete. The Chargers moved to 7-3 on the season.
