Ranking Antonio Gates' Top 5 Stats of Hall of Fame Career

GatesTop5

Antonio Gates will soon be immortalized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The legendary Chargers tight end will be enshrined in Canton, Ohio on Saturday, with the four-man Class of 2025 bumping the total number of inductees to 382.

Gates will become the 23rd undrafted free agent to have his bust immortalized in the Hall, and he's also the very first player in the Hall of Fame to have never played a down of college football.

And as impressive as his resumé of accolades is, his stats might be on par with them.

Narrowing down a ranking of his most impressive stats is a tough feat, but here is a top 5 ranking of Gates' best stats:

1. 116 career TD catches

Of course, this had to be at the top of the list.

There has never been a tight end in the history of the NFL to score more touchdowns than Gates did with 116. It's a number that ranks seventh all-time among all positions.

Gates owns the record alone as he took sole possession of it during the 2017 season in a Week 2 game against the Dolphins.

Facing a second-and-goal from the 7 in the third quarter, Gates etched his name into the record books with a jump ball grab in the end zone from quarterback Philip Rivers.

The tight end would go on to score four more touchdowns over the next pair of seasons and pushed the total to new heights.

Chargers Legend Antonio Gates' 116 career touchdown receptions ranks No. 1 all-time among tight ends, with the Bolts holding a 53-39 record when Gates found the endzone. Take a look back at each score from his legendary career.

2. Chargers all-time leader

These next stat(s) show just how dominant the big tight end was — and why he is one of the greatest Chargers of all time.

Gates became the franchise's leader in career receptions (955), receiving yards (11,841) and touchdown catches (116) over his 16-year career.

His receptions are 51 clear of second place, while his receiving total is 1,311 yards more than the runner-up.

He was a reception machine as a player, totaling at least 60 receptions in nine of his seasons with the team and two with over 80. His 89 receptions in 2005 are the most in single season by a tight end in Chargers history.

Gates' reception and yardage total both rank fourth all-time among players at his position.

3. Red-zone weapon

Anytime the Chargers got to the 20-yard line and in, there was a good chance No. 85 found his way in the end zone.

Gates tallied 93 red-zone touchdown catches from the 20-yard line and in, a number that stands alone in NFL lore.

His 93 scores in the red zone would rank 14th all-time on their own and would be the third-most by any tight end all-time.

For reference of how astonishing it is, the figure is one more touchdown than legendary tight end Rob Gronkowski had in his entire career.

"The guy has the most touchdowns ever by a tight end," Gronkowski told Chargers.com earlier this year. "Everyone knows me as the red-zone threat, and I still don't even have as many touchdowns as Antonio Gates.

"That speaks volumes right there because I wanted that record and I didn't even come close to getting that record," Gronkowski said. "I'm off by 24 touchdowns still to this day."

Take a look back at the best photos of Antonio Gates' career. Gates recorded 11,841 receiving yards and 116 touchdowns throughout his time with the Chargers.

4. Multi-TD machine

Here we are again with the touchdowns.

It can't be emphasized enough how much of a force the 6-foot-4 tight end was as amismatch, and it's part of the reason why he was such a prolific scorer during his Hall of Fame career.

Gates owns the most multi-touchdown games by a tight end with 21 such performances, 16 of them coming with Rivers as his quarterback.

He also registered eight seasons with eight-plus receiving touchdowns, the most ever by a tight end and tied for the fifth-most all-time overall.

Simply put, No. 85 loved scoring touchdowns.

5. The money down

Whenever the Rivers and Co. found themselves in a third-down situation, Gates was more than happy to come up clutch.

The tight end hauled in 39 career touchdown receptions on third down, the most ever by anyone at his position. That number is also tied with Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter for No. 3 overall.

Time and time again when the Bolts needed it on key downs, Gates would find a way to produce.
