10 Things to Watch: Rookie Watch

With training camp on the horizon, we'll preview 10 of the most intriguing storylines to watch for when the Bolts kick things off on July 28.

Rookies are always front and center when it comes to training camp as fans want to get their first look at the newest Chargers.

This year, fans are in for a treat as the Bolts have a dynamic assortment of rookies at skill positions.

First and foremost, there's Derwin James. After all, first-round picks will always garner the most attention.  That's especially the case for James as he's a trendy pick among pundits to earn Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

Still, fans need to temper their expectations as James hasn't taken a single snap in the NFL.

While it's understandable to be excited about landing what some call the steal of the draft, you never know how long it takes a rookie to adjust to the pro level.  Training camp should give us a better gauge at where James is at this time.

Meanwhile, OLB Uchenna Nwosu and DT Justin Jones are also looking to make their mark when camp opens. Both players were selected on day two of the draft, and the team hopes each can make an impact when Week 1 rolls around.

Other rookies to pay attention to are fourth-round pick Kyzir White, who is making the transition from safety to linebacker, fifth-round selection Scott Quessenberry, a lifelong Chargers fan who will be worked in at center and guard, sixth-round pick Dylan Cantrell, a big wide receiver out of Texas Tech, and seventh-round selection Justin Jackson, who authored one of the best careers for a running back in Big Ten history.

Finally, it's no secret the Chargers boast the NFL's best track record when it comes to undrafted free agents. There are over 20 candidates to join the likes of Jahleel Addae, Trevor Williams, Tyrell Williams, Austin Ekeler and more as impact players who were former rookie free agents.
