Each NFL team is allowed to host players who attended colleges or high schools in and around its city.
On Thursday, 14 of the finest prospects America's Finest City has to offer were on hand at Chargers Park taking part at San Diego's local pro day.
"It's a win-win for the college players and the Chargers," General Manager Tom Telesco said. "It gives us some extra exposure on these players and it gives them, especially those from local high schools, the chance to work out for their hometown team. I think it shows the strength of high school football in San Diego to have kids from Helix, La Costa Canyon, Vista, Valhalla and Rancho Bernardo working out for their local NFL team."
San Diego State was well represented at the workout as six of the 14 players on hand were former Aztecs. Having spent the past four seasons representing America's Finest City, guard Darrell Greene went through the workouts proudly donning SDSU apparel.
"This was a very humbling experience," he said. "It was an honor to be invited out here to work out for them. It was great to work out with my former teammates. It was good to see everybody. We have a history together, and we are all going to be going our separate ways. So it was good to link up one more time and see the guys."
Each player was put through drills specific for his position under the watchful eye of Chargers coaches and scouts. Afterwards, many players spoke on how an ideal landing spot would be to play for their hometown Chargers.
"It meant a lot to me to represent San Diego for four seasons," said Greene. "San Diego State has a passionate fan base, so to possibly transition from San Diego State to the San Diego Chargers if they draft me would be a great thing."
