Running Recap: 49ers Storm Back to Beat Bolts 31-21

The Bolts finished the preseason 1-3 with a 31-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.  The visitors were on the board first, 6-0, after running back DuJuan Harris capped off a 16-play, 85-yard drive with a one-yard score and a failed two-point conversion.  Naval Reserve Officer and fullback Chris Swain scored his first NFL touchdown late in the second quarter to help his team take the lead.  It was a special moment for number 30 as his touchdown fittingly came on Salute to the Military night.  With mere seconds left in the first half, Phil Dawson helped his team regain the the lead with a 32-yard field goal.  QB Kellen Clemens played the entire first half for the Bolts going 11 of 15 for 113 yards.  Isaiah Burse led the receivers with three catches for 39 yards.

Mike Bercovici entered at QB for the second half and after a 44-yard run by Kenneth Farrow, number 27 took the ball into the end zone on the next play for a 14-9 lead.  The teams traded interceptions after Adrian McDonald inked one for the Bolts and Rashard Robinson notched one for his team two plays later.  The interceptions continued as Trevor Williams nabbed one of his own for the third turnover in six plays.  Isaiah Burse scored the second touchdown of the third quarter for the Chargers to increase his team's lead 21-9.  Late in the fourth quarter, Christian Ponder ran into the end zone to bring the score to 21-16 and four plays after the Niners recovered a forced fumble, number 5 ran five and scored his second rushing TD of the night.  A positive two-point conversion helped the 49ers regain the lead, 24-21.  Shortly after that, the Niners capitalized on a short field after a turnover with Kelvin Taylor rushing 10-yards for the score and 31-21 victory for San Francisco.

IMPACT PLAYS

First Quarter

7:35 – DuJuan Harris ran the ball in for a short TD, but the Niners' two-point conversion attempt was no good.

5:16 – Tight end Sean McGrath took a Kellen Clemens' pass 12 yards to move the chains on third down.  On the next play, running back Kenneth Farrow caught a short pass and ran for 16.

1:51 – Facing a 4th-and-1 from the SF 30, the Chargers offense stayed on the field but couldn't convert and turned it over on downs.

:40 – Adrian Phillips got a hand on the ball to break up a pass from Kaepernick to bring up third down. 

:16 – On second down, Isaiah Burse took a pass up the middle for a gain of 18 to end the quarter.

Second Quarter

13:44 – Burse appeared to be stopped, but juked his defender to gain a bit of extra yardage to move into San Francisco territory. 

11:04 – The offense went for it again on 4th down and converted with another Clemens to Burse connection, this one good for five yards.

9:39 – Asante Cleveland got involved with a catch good for 11-yards to move the sticks.

5:33 – Chris Swain powered through to score a two-yard TD for the Bolts to take the 7-6 lead.

2:04 – Facing a 4th-and-1, Harris took the ball up the right sideline for 15 yards.

:04 – Phil Dawson booted a 32-yard field goal to give his team the 9-7 lead.

Third Quarter

14:15 – Mike Bercovici dropped back and with plenty of time to throw, connected with Dom Williams for a gain of 26. 

13:06 – After gaining 44 yards on a run play, Farrow took the ball off right tackle for a six-yard TD.

11:56 – Adrian McDonald intercepted Jeff Driskel's pass to give possession back to the home team.

11:05 – Rashard Robinson from the Niners scored an INT for his team and ran the ball back six yards.

9:40 – Trevor Williams notched the third turnover in six plays after picking off Driskel.

6:57 – Bercovici connected with Burse and the receiver ran into the end zone untouched for a 17-yard score.

3:28 – Marcus Rush came through the line to sack the QB for a loss of five.

Fourth Quarter

12:49 – Dawson's 47-yard field goal sailed wide left to keep the score 21-9, Chargers.

8:19 – Kelvin Taylor burst through for a gain of 15 yards for the 49ers.

7:21 – Ben Gardner sacked Christian Ponder for a loss of five. 

5:53 – Ponder ran into the end zone for a one-yard score.

4:32 – Rush sacked Bercovici and forced a fumble that was recovered by San Francisco.

3:21 – Ponder scored again, and after a good two-point conversion attempt, the Niners regained the lead.

3:01 – Robinson deflected a Bercovici pass into the arms of Rush who ran it back eight yards.

2:00 – Taylor ran up the middle for a 10-yard TD. 

:48 – Ponder took a series of knees to end the game.
