Quick Observations from the 31-21 Loss to the 49ers

The San Diego Chargers fell 31-21 to the San Francisco 49ers in the final preseason match.  Despite the loss, some of the youngest Bolts found the end zone in FB Chris Swain, RB Kenneth Farrow and WR Isaiah Burse.

Stat of the Game:

Two undrafted free agents out of Houston wearing number 27 for the Chargers made impact players as Kenneth Farrow had a game-high 63 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Adrian McDonald had an interception.

Play of the Game:

Chris Swain has two jobs – fullback for the Chargers and a reserve officer in the Navy.  On Salute to the Military Night, the fullback ran up the gut off right guard and dove ahead for a two-yard touchdown to give the Bolts a 7-6 lead midway through the second quarter.

Turning Point:

Down 21-9 in the fourth quarter, Christian Ponder took his team downfield and ran into the end zone for a one-yard score.  The nine-play, 54-yard drive brought the 49ers within five points of the lead.

It Was Over When:

Although the Niners took a three point lead with just over three minutes left in the game, they tacked on seven more after capitalizing on a short field off a San Diego turnover.   Kelvin Taylor ran the ball in the end zone for 10 yards to score the 49ers third unanswered touchdown with two minutes left in the game.

"Tonight was a great opportunity for a lot of players.  We have some tough decisions to make this weekend and it's a tough time as coaches and as an organization. We've got to get down to the 53 and tell some players they're not going to be with us any longer, (but) I can't thank them enough." – Head Coach Mike McCoy

"(The touchdown) felt awesome.  I love the support out there from all of the military.  We appreciate everything you do for our country (and) it was awesome to score a touchdown on a special night." – FB Chris Swain

"(I want to) just get better, work on my craft each and every day (and) learn from the things that might have happened in the preseason to get ready for the regular season." – S Dexter McCoil

"I loved being in the end zone and it happened to have been my first (touchdown) of the NFL preseason.  I had fun and it was an exciting moment out there for me and my teammates and I just appreciate the opportunity." – WR Isaiah Burse

"Getting in the situation with me missing two games, I feel like when I got the opportunity to go out there, I did pretty good.  I am definitely satisfied with when I was out there (and) I feel like I did some good things." – RB Kenneth Farrow
