The Bolts took a trip up the 405 freeway the day after Week 3 for a special occasion.

Chargers tackle Joe Alt and Susie Spanos, wife of Chargers Chairman of the Board and Controlling Owner Dean Spanos, recently visited patients at the UCLA Health Bowyer Oncology Center and UCLA Health Pediatrics Infusion Center.

As part of the continued partnership between UCLA Health and the Chargers, the two went around through the hospital, visiting different patients, staff and interacting with them and their families.

It was a special day for all involved.

"It was amazing," Alt said. "I had this day circled for a long time. Just to be able to experience it was really, really special for me and something I'll never forget."

Spanos added: "It made my whole day to see their faces brighten up and it changed their whole day."

The two went from room to room, conversing with the patients and handing out Chargers merchandise like hats, socks and mini footballs signed by Alt.

"Being able to see everyone, just to be able to brighten up their day and be able to do that is so special and so important," Alt said. "The questions like, 'How tall are you?' and stuff like that just to get their mind off things is always super fun."

On Sept. 22, Chargers T Joe Alt and Susie Spanos – wife of Chargers Chairman of the Board and Controlling Owner Dean Spanos, who is herself a breast cancer survivor and champion for early detection – visited patients at the UCLA Health Bowyer Oncology Center and UCLA Health Pediatrics Infusion Center, where they provided the patients with an afternoon of joy and special Chargers-branded merchandise.

Not only was it an experience for those on hand, it was also an opportunity for them to show appreciation to nurses, doctors and staff who all interacted with the Chargers tackle as well.

Alt took pictures and made sure to hand some things out to staff as well, as he wanted to show his appreciation for the work they do too.

"This was the coolest. The patients were so excited to see us," Spanos said. "It's so inspiring, all the nurses and all the doctors and what everyone does here. It's a state-of-the-art facility. We're so happy to be here with UCLA Health."

Alt added: "That's what it is, showing appreciation for the work they put in. The work they do is unbelievable. It's important for me to be there and to experience that was amazing."

Barb Jagels, the Senior Director, Cancer Services at UCLA Health, said visits like these have a huge impact on everyone involved.

"What's really important is our providers, nurse practitioners and most importantly the patients loved to interact with the players and administrators and everyone who contributes to the Chargers," Jagels said. "It changes the way they view their care because they're here for doing something that's not very much fun.

"Joe and Susie today completely changed the vibe of the clinic and the infusion area and brightened everyone's outlook," Jagels said.

It was a day that stuck out to Alt and Spanos, and another opportunity for the Bolts to give back to the community.

"I feel like I've been blessed being able to give back in any way possible," Alt said. "If that's just putting smiles on people's faces or give them a signed hat, it's so important to me."

Spanos added: "It means so much because we have a big platform and we're able to make a difference. Today we made a difference in all these patients lives and also all the nurses. Everyone that's working here were all happy. It makes us feel so good."
