The Chargers announced Friday that former NFL safety Chris Harris has been named assistant defensive backs coach.  He replaces Greg Williams, who was hired by the Indianapolis Colts as defensive backs coach earlier in the week. Harris most recently served as defensive quality control coach for the Chicago Bears in 2013-14, where he worked closely with their safeties.

An eight-year pro in the NFL, Harris was Chicago's sixth-round pick (181st overall) in 2005.  He played four seasons with the Bears over two separate stints from 2005-06 and 2010-11, and was named second-team All-Pro by the Associated Press in 2010. The safety memorably intercepted Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLI, although the Colts went on to win 29-17.

Harris also played for the Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars over his career, totaling 422 tackles, 16 interceptions, 13 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries and 37 passes defensed in 101 games with 88 starts.  He set a Panthers franchise record in 2007 with seven forced fumbles.
