Derwin James, Jr. took center stage over the weekend.

The Chargers safety delivered the commencement address at the University of Bridgeport on Saturday while also being awarded an honorary degree (Doctor of Humane Letters).

James' speech took place at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Connecticut.

James, a two-time Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, is coming off one of the best seasons of his career in 2024.

James earned Second-Team All-Pro honors at slot cornerback after thriving in Jesse Minter's defensive scheme last season.

James recorded 93 total tackles (60 solo) and had seven passes defended, 10 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and one interception in 16 games.

He also tied for the most quarterback pressures among defensive backs in the NFL with 21 during the regular season, according to Next Gen Stats. He was six pressures clear of second place.

Overall, James made an impact on every level of the defense. He played 361 snaps at slot corner, 281 in the box and 234 at free safety this season, according to Pro Football Focus.
