Chargers Sign Pair of Defensive Veterans

The San Diego Chargers made four transactions prior to their second day of training camp, signing defensive tackle Bruce Gaston and cornerback Carrington Byndom.  To make room, the team waived-injured defensive tackle Carlos Wray and cornerback Terrell Chestnut.

Gaston appeared in nine games last season, recording 12 tackles and one sack as he split his time between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears.  The 6-2, 310-pound defensive tackle played in two games for Green Bay, registering two tackles, before being waived and subsequently signed to their practice squad.  Chicago then signed him to their active roster as he appeared in seven games, totaling eight tackles and one sack. The Purdue product has also spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings since entering the league in 2014.

Meanwhile, Byndom returns to the Bolts after spending a short stint on the practice squad last season.  The 6-0, 180-pound cornerback appeared in five games (three regular season, two postseason) for the Carolina Panthers in 2014.  He ended last season as a member of the Cardinals practice squad, but was waived earlier this month. The Texas product appeared in 51 games with the Longhorns from 2010-13, notching 189 tackles, two sacks, five interceptions (two for a touchdown), 29 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
