A transformative offseason for the San Diego Chargers' coaching staff is now complete as the Bolts named the final two coaches coming aboard for 2016. They include former Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees as offensive assistant and Marquice Williams as special teams assistant.
Rees quarterbacked the Irish from 2010-13, playing alongside current Chargers Manti Te'o, Chris Watt and Trevor Robinson. He started as a sophomore and a senior, throwing for 2,871 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2011 and 3,257 yards with 27 touchdowns as a senior. Rees signed with the Washington Redskins in 2014 but was released during the offseason, and joined Pat Fitzgerald's coaching staff at Northwestern University shortly after as an offensive graduate assistant. Last season, the Wildcats went 10-3 and ended the year ranked No. 23 in the final Associated Press Top-25 poll.
Williams arrives in San Diego after coaching at the University of South Dakota from 2012-15, including last season as special teams coordinator. He also coached outside linebackers and the defensive line during his tenure. Williams began his coaching career in 2010 at Winona State before moving on to Central Oklahoma in 2011 and South Dakota in 2012. In 2013, he was invited to participate in the NFL's Minority Coaching Fellowship program with the Chicago Bears, and in 2014, was invited back to serve as a coaching intern. Williams completed a similar internship with the Detroit Lions last season.
