Chargers vs. Chiefs in Brazil: Everything You Need to Know About Week 1 Game in São Paulo

Brazil16x9

The Bolts are going to Brazil!

The Chargers have been selected as the NFL's designated team for a regular-season game in São Paulo. This marks the second straight year the NFL has played a game in Brazil.

Here is everything you need to know about the Chargers playing in Brazil.

When is the game? And who are the Chargers playing?

The Chargers will open the 2025 season with a Week 1 game in São Paulo on Friday, September 5.

The Bolts will play the Chiefs as the teams will kick off 2025 with an AFC West showdown. Kickoff is 5 p.m. (PT) on YouTube.

This will mark the 10th time the teams have met in Week 1.

The rest of the Chargers 2025 schedule will be released May 14 at 5 p.m. (PT).

Where will the Chargers play?

The Chargers and Chiefs will play at Arena Corinthians, which is in São Paulo and opened in May of 2014.

The stadium has a seating capacity of 47,252, making it the 13th-largest stadium in Brazil.

Arena Corinthians hosted six matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, including the opening match on June 12. Temporary seats were added to the stadium to meet the World Cup minimum requirement of 65,000.

Arena Corinthians also hosted 10 men's and women's soccer matches at the 2016 Summer Olympics, including the women's bronze-medal match.

The stadium is also known as Neo Química Arena because of a sponsorship with a Brazilian-based pharmaceutical company.

Who currently plays at Arena Corinthians?

The stadium is home to Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, a soccer team otherwise known as SC Corinthians.

The team plays in the Brazilian Serie A League, which is the country's top tier for soccer.

SC Corinthians has won the Brazilian Serie A League seven times, most recently in 2017.

What playing surface does Arena Corinthians have?

Arena Corinthians features a hybrid playing surface called GrassMaster, which is a product that combines perennial Ryegrass with artificial fibers.

How big is São Paulo?

São Paulo is the capital city of the state of São Paulo as both share a name.

São Paulo is home to more than 22 million people, making it the fifth-largest city in the entire world. For context, the population of Los Angeles is roughly 3.8 million and the population of the greater LA area is more than 18 million.

São Paulo is the most populous city in Brazil, the Americas, and both the Western and Southern Hemispheres.

What time zone is São Paulo in?

São Paulo recognizes the Brasília Time Zone, which is currently five hours ahead of Pacific Time.

So, if it is currently noon in Los Angeles then it is 5 p.m. in São Paulo.

However, the time change reduces to four hours beginning in March due to Daylight Saving Time.

This means there is likely going to be a four-hour time difference when the Chargers play in São Paulo in Week 1.

What could the weather be like in São Paulo?

According to data obtained from The Weather Channel, the average São Paulo temperature in September is around 73 degrees.

If we specifically look at Sept. 5, the average temperature is 75 degrees with nearly 80 percent humidity.

When was the Chargers most-recent international game?

The Chargers will play their first international game in six seasons in 2025.

The Bolts last played outside of the United States in 2019 when they faced off against the Chiefs at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Where else have the Bolts played overseas?

Believe it or not, the Chargers have been world travelers of sorts as the game in Brazil will be their eighth overall international game, four of which have come in the regular season.

The Bolts have played twice at Wembley Stadium in London (2018 against Tennessee and 2008 against New Orleans).

The Chargers also played the St. Louis Cardinals in a 1976 preseason game in Tokyo, Japan, at the Mainichi Star Bowl.

The Bolts later played preseason games in Berlin, Germany (1994 against the Giants), Tokyo (1996 against the Giants) and Sydney, Australia (1999 against the Broncos).

How many continents have the Chargers played on?

Four so far.

The Chargers have played on North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

But when the game in South America kicks off, the Chargers will become first-ever NFL team to play games on five continents.

The Bolts will also be just the fourth NFL team to play games in seven different countries.

Has the NFL been to Brazil before?

Yes.

The Eagles were the designated team in 2024 as they hosted the Packers in the first-ever game in Brazil.

Philadelphia earned a 34-29 win in a game that was played in Week 1 on September 6, 2024.

The teams also played at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo.
