Bolts Have Full Faith Should Kellen Clemens Start vs. Bills

With Philip Rivers currently in the concussion protocol, there is a chance a different quarterback will start under center for the Chargers for the first time in 186 games.

Should that be the case, the Bolts have full faith turning the reins over to Kellen Clemens.

"Kellen's been in this system long enough," said Head Coach Anthony Lynn said.  "He knows this offense like the back of his hands.   So (our game plan) won't change very much."

"We've got all the confidence in the world in Kellen," added Antonio Gates.  "When you play here, and you've put in the work and sacrifice that he's made, we feel no different about him than we do any other backup quarterback.   Obviously Philip is the cornerstone of what we do and how we implement our game plan.  But I'm quite sure we'll do things (to) maximize Kellen's ability if need be."

A 12-year veteran in his fourth year with the Chargers, Clemens has 21 starts under his belt.  He's appeared in 57 games since being drafted in the second round (49th overall) by the Jets in the 2006 NFL Draft. He's completed 344 of 630 attempts for 4,017 yards and 16 touchdowns.  Clemens has also played for the Rams and Texans.  His most extensive action came in 2013 with the Rams when he started nine games, completing 142 of 242 passes for 1,673 yards and eight touchdowns.  He also ran the ball 23 times for 64 yards.

While it's hard to replicate everything Rivers does on the field, they have full confidence in Clemens should the veteran be pressed into action.

"Complete faith in Kellen," guard Kenny Wiggins said.  "He's a 12-year pro.  He has starting experience and knows the offense just as well as anybody. It's going to take a lot for Philip not to be out there, but if he is, Kellen will run the show."
