Bolt Academy Students Participate in Rize Financial Literacy Event

The Bolt was host to another important event for the students from Bolt Academy.

Along with Rize Credit Union, the Chargers Impact Fund hosted a financial literacy event for members of the Bolt Academy at the team's facility in El Segundo.

Bolt Academy, presented by Rize Credit Union, is a unique partnership between the Impact Fund, Inglewood Unified School District and Brotherhood Crusade that helps students from Inglewood high schools build leadership and career readiness skills.

This event was one that went a long way in that, as the Bolt Academy scholars had a day filled with learning new valuable lessons when it comes to finances.

"For us and Bolt Academy, this one was important because we teach throughout the program the realities of life and different aspects of it," Chargers Impact Fund Senior Manager Taylor Chavez said. "Money is one huge part of it after you graduate and you're on your own.

"We wanted to give them, through this simulation, a little bit of that reality when they get to do it on their own," Chavez added.

After arriving to The Bolt, the students gathered in the team meeting room where they were given the rundown of the activity.

The Chargers Impact Fund, in partnership with RIZE Federal Credit Union, hosted 20 Bolt Academy Scholars for an engaging financial literacy event at The Bolt. During the experience, Scholars were challenged with real-life scenarios—complete with careers, income, debt, and family responsibilities—designed to help them practice smart decision-making and learn how to successfully manage expenses along the way.

Using Mad City Money, a 2-hour simulation, each student received a profile describing their assigned job, income and other financial obligations and prompts.

From there, the activity began as they visited different stations where they selected and made decisions on housing, transportation, food, household goods and other necessities.

"It really brings together not only the community, but also really teaching these kids how to adult," Vice President of Social Impact for Rize Credit Union Diana Cervantes said. "It's all about adulting.

"At the end of the day, we want to make sure we give them an opportunity to experience it," Cervantes added. "Visiting every single one of the stations is an experience whether it's spending, saving or just seeing how much things actually cost."

Chavez added: "The overall goal was to ensure that all of the students get a glimpse of reality once they graduate high school and are able to open their own banking accounts. Rize was really leading the front in that with creating Mad City Money."

The activity lasted about 45 minutes, but its value goes much further than that.

"It's so valuable," Cervantes said. "As they're growing up, how many times have we sat down and went through bills? It didn't happen with me, even in school. There's only certain things we touch in school but this is reality.

"You get to go and make decisions, to spend money," Cervantes added. "You're given an occupation, a life, a situation, so now you're empowered to make those decisions."

As the students continue to learn valuable career and life skills with the Bolt Academy, the event was another that goes a long way.

"We are so grateful and blessed to be able to make the level of impact with this wonderful organization," Cervantes said. "We really do look forward to scaling up not only the impact that we have on the youth but also the community. We're blessed and grateful that we have an opportunity to do that."

Chavez added: "I think this is going to be so valuable for them… this was kind of an eye opener for them and will help them how to budget and save money."
