The Los Angeles Chargers today announced the team has acquired tackle Austin Deculus from the Houston Texans. In exchange, the Chargers will send a 2027 conditional seventh-round pick to Houston.
Deculus (pronounced DECK-you-lus) was a sixth-round selection by Houston in the 2022 NFL Draft (205th overall), Deculus has appeared in 15 career games including the postseason, making a pair of starts. He saw the most action of his career in 2023, when he played in seven games with one start, contributing along an offensive line that protected quarterback C.J. Stroud to throw for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns and earn recognition as Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year.
A four-year starter at right tackle at Louisiana State, Deculus played five years for the Tigers (2017-21), starting 46-of-61 career games played. His 61 games were the most by any player in program history. Deculus protected the eventual No. 1 overall selection and Heisman Trophy Award winner in quarterback Joe Burrow in 2019 as the team went 15-0 and won a national championship. That season, he helped running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire top 1,000 rushing yards.
