In the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the Chargers selected first-team All-SEC punter Drew Kaser from Texas A&M.
Kaser finished his Aggies career with the second-highest punt average (46.2) in NCAA history. A first-team All-SEC pick and a first-team All-America by CBSSports.com as a senior in 2015, Kaser punted 168 times for 7,761 yards with a long of 76 and 60 inside the 20 in four seasons with the Aggies. As a senior, he set a school record with 26 punts over 50 yards. As a sophomore in 2013, Kaser set a then-school record with a 47.4-yard average that earned him a host of honors, including All-America recognition from the Associated Press and Sporting News, and first-team All-SEC accolades. He also was tabbed as a finalist for the Ray Guy Award as the nation’s top punter.
Kaser always wears a cluster of wristbands, each representing something near and dear to his heart. One represents his mother Kelly’s fight with brain cancer, while another represents the love for one of his best friends back home whose father died of a heart attack. There’s one for his grade-school football coach who died of cancer, one for “players curing kids cancer,” one for “Charlie’s Angels” (in honor of a Houston child who survived cancer), and one in his grandfather’s memory.
