Mailbag: Which Charger is Not Getting the Recognition He Deserves?

Q:  Hear so much about Bosa, Rivers, Gordon and so on, but who is having a very good season that isn't getting the props and recognition he should? – Dan Griffin

A: A lot of options here, but I am going to have to go with Corey Liuget.  New additions this year like Joey Bosa and Brandon Mebane have had excellent seasons, and they've rightfully garnered a ton of attention.  But because of that, Liuget's contributions have flown under the radar more so than previous seasons.  The defensive tackle is in the midst of another impressive campaign, leading all Chargers linemen with 36 tackles.  His seven tackles for loss are tied for second on the team behind Bosa (10) while his 25 pressures rank third behind Melvin Ingram (29) and Bosa (26). Perhaps the only disappointment is that he hasn't registered a sack this season, but he is also being tasked with different responsibilities than his first five years with the Bolts.  Liuget's overall contributions have been outstanding across the board and deserve to be recognized.

Q:  Your stats differ on defense from what sites like NFL.com or ESPN.com have for our guys. What gives? – J. Bell

A: I go by our coaching stats rather than the ones the NFL provides as they are a more accurate description of how our players perform.  They take a closer look at the film, and no one knows the team better than they do, which is why I use their data.  For instance, the NFL stats for Joey Bosa has him with 22 total tackles, 15 solo tackles, 4.5 sacks and one forced fumble while the coaches stats have the rookie with 21 total tackles, 17 solo tackles, 4.5 sacks, one forced fumble and additional info including 10 tackles for loss, 26 pressures and five QB hits.

Q:  Bro you tweeted out the Bucs are your favorite team in NFC right now but I really don't know anyone on that team outside of Jameis Winston, Doug Martin and Mike Evans.  Why you like them?  I can't name many players!!!! – Lorenzo Parra

A: Those are three guys everyone should know, but they are just a fun team to watch.  Adam Humphries at wide receiver is a player you should know.  The slot receiver reminds me a lot of Eddie Royal when he was here, and complements the big-play threat of Evans.  I'm also a big fan of Cameron Brate.  In my book, the tight end is a Pro Bowler this season as the third-year product out of Harvard has 41 catches for 442 yards and five TDs on the year.  Meanwhile on defense, the Bucs boast one of the top corners in my view still in Brent Grimes.  He has been a thorn in the side of Philip Rivers especially with four picks in three games over the last three seasons while with the Dolphins.  Add in the likes of Gerald McCoy, Noah Spence and so on, they are my sleeper pick to go far in the playoffs this year in the NFC. It will be a really tough test this week, but also a fun game.  Tickets still remain so I urge you to come on out to the Q and watch the Bolts battle the Bucs!
