Quick Observations from the 20-17 OT Loss to the Jaguars

The Los Angeles Chargers fell to 3-6 on the season after losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-17 in overtime.

Stat of the Game:

On a 20-yard strike to Mike Williams in the second quarter, Philip Rivers passed Warren Moon for the eighth-most completions in NFL history.

Play of the Game:

On 2nd-and-8, Philip Rivers stepped back and found Austin Ekeler turning upfield.  The running back took in the pass and made a cut to gain more yardage.  As he rounded the first down marker, Ekeler momentarily lost his balance, but tiptoed up the sideline to stay in bounds, finding pay dirt for the 28-yard score.  His touchdown gave the Bolts a 7-6 lead.

Turning Point:

Unable to get the first down off Tre Boston's second interception with just over a minute to go, the Chargers were forced to punt clinging to a 17-14 lead. On their ensuing drive, the Jaguars got down to the LAC 35, but on first down, a roughing the passer penalty was called on Joey Bosa.  The penalty gave the Jags 15 yards and moved them into safer field goal range.  Three plays later, Josh Lambo kicked a 34-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.

It Was Over When:

The Chargers got the ball in OT after the Jaguars were forced to punt.  Facing a 3rd-and-9, Rivers' pass intended for Travis Benjamin was intercepted by A.J. Bouye.  Bouye ran the ball back 51 yards to the Chargers' two-yard line.  Four plays later, Lambo returned to kick the game-winning field goal.

Bolt Quotebook

"We've lost some close games this year, but that's the first time that we've lost one like that. To me, that was inexcusable. We had opportunities to win that game on the road, and we didn't finish plays. We had a couple of guys do some dumb things." – Head Coach Anthony Lynn

"We know there's not much room (for error) when we started today. We have a tough hill to climb, but I think we'll be up for the task." – QB Philip Rivers

"We're not going to dwell on this. We are going to look at the film and get ready for the Bills. They have a pretty good team. We need to correct our mistakes. It's a one-game mentality. We aren't going to dwell on this game." – CB Desmond King

Odds and Ends

The Jaguars outgained the Chargers 398-322 in total yardage.  They held advantages both in passing (273-235) and rushing (135-87).

Denzel Perryman paced the defense with nine total tackles.  The team had three sacks on the day courtesy of Joey Bosa, Desmond King and Kyle Emanuel.

Austin Ekeler led the offense in rushing and passing yards. He and Melvin Gordon both had a game-high five receptions.

Corey Liuget blocked a Josh Lambo point after attempt in the first quarter. It marked the first blocked PAT for the Chargers since John Parrella got to a Todd Peterson kick on Nov. 4, 2001, against Kansas City.

Austin Ekeler became the first running back with multiple receiving touchdowns of 20-plus yards in a game since Jamaal Charles in Week 15, 2013.

Head Coach Anthony Lynn named Denzel Perryman as an honorary captain.

Inactives for the Chargers included QB Cardale Jones, WR Geremy Davis, RB Branden Oliver, LB Hayes Pullard, RT Joe Barksdale, TE Sean Culkin and TE Jeff Cumberland.

The Bolts take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in a post-bye week matchup.
