Practice Report: Big Plays Highlight the Fifth Day of Camp

TOP PLAYS:

Hunter Henry showcased his soft hands, snaring a bullet that appeared out of reach with his fingertips for a 20-yard gain along the sideline.

Casey Hayward had a strong day right from the start, highlighted by a one-handed pass breakup early in one-on-one's.

Tyrell Williams used his speed over the middle to break free for a 70-yard TD reception that brought the crowd to its feet.

Adrian Phillips "sacked" the QB with a perfectly timed blitz.

Joey Bosa had an impressive pass rush on third-and-short to disrupt the offense.

Tenny Palepoi had a strong interior rush up the middle all day long, particularly toward the end of practice on consecutive plays.

Dwight Lowery sniffed out an end around to Travis Benjamin near the goal line, stopping the speedy wideout shy of the goal line.

Desmond King showed off his strength, ripping the ball out of the receiver's hands at the last minute.

Travis Benjamin had a nasty double move to gain separation in the back of the end zone for a TD.  He also caught yet another deep bomb for a score.

Artavis Scott made a juggling catch in the back of the end zone.

Dontrelle Inman made an impressive play on the ball in the back of the end zone, but Denzel Perryman one-upped him by forcing number 15 down out of bounds.

Jeff Cumberland hauled in a bullet near the goal line between a pair of defenders before crossing the goal line.

Damion Square got his mitts up to bat a ball down at the line of scrimmage.

Jamaal Jones used terrific leverage as he shielded off the cornerback on his TD catch.

Melvin Ingram showed off his arsenal of rush moves to quickly race around the edge.

Trevor Williams showed off his speed as he stayed stride for stride with Travis Benjamin on a deep ball that fell incomplete.

Kenjon Barner caught a pass out of the backfield and turned on the jets for a long touchdown.

Rayshawn Jenkins had a nice breakup as he perfectly timed his jump to go over the top of the receiver.

WHO IMPRESSED:

Ricky Henne's Take:The one-on-one battles between the wide receivers and cornerbacks are always a highlight of training camp.  The last time they squared off, it was the wideouts who clearly got the better of the defense.  Today, the cornerbacks showed out.  In fact, they began the session with four straight passes defensed during red zone action. Meanwhile, Hunter Henry continues to show why he's a rising star in this league.  He's had so many impressive catches this week, but his fingertip snare today might have been the best.

ODDS AND ENDS:

Jason Verrett was activated off PUP and practiced for the first time this year.

Darrell Stuckey was released/failed physical, ending a memorable seven-year tenure for the five-time team captain.

Keenan Allen did not practice with what Head Coach Anthony Lynn called a sore calf.  KA13 could have taken the field, but the Bolts chose to give him a rest day

The Chargers will practice against the Rams on Saturday in their first action at StubHub Center.

BOLTS QUOTEBOOK:

*"The kicking competition and punting competition are two of the better competitions going on on our team right now.  Those guys are really competing.  I like (them) stepping up.  I told someone the other day, if the rest of the groups compete the way those groups are competing, we're going to be OK." – *Head Coach Anthony Lynn

"He meant a lot to all of us and he changed us as people." WR Dontrelle Inman on S Darrell Stuckey

*"It felt too good to be out there. I've been waiting too long for this moment, dealing with a lot of ups and downs with the process.  I can't wait to deliver and move past all the pain I'd been going through.  I learned a lot about myself sitting out and having to watch.  I became stronger mentally." – *CB Jason Verrett
