After helping three teams reach the Super Bowl as a secondary coach in each of his NFL stops, the Detroit Lions hired Austin as defensive coordinator in 2014. Detroit has reached the playoffs in two of his three seasons leading the defense.
Austin began his Lions career with a bang as Detroit ranked second in overall defense in 2014, surrendering just 300.9 yards per game. They also set a franchise record allowing only 69.3 rushing yards per game, which was best in the NFL. The next closest team was the Denver Broncos, who gave up over 10 yards more per game. Detroit also gave up the second fewest points per game (17.6).
Prior to joining Detroit, Austin spent three years leading the Ravens secondary, a span in which Baltimore ranked first overall in pass defense. In 2012, the Ravens intercepted six passes in the postseason on their way to winning Super Bowl XLVII.
Austin spent three seasons from 2007-09 on then Cardinals Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt’s staff, helping guide Arizona to a Super Bowl XLIII appearance. He also helped Seattle reach Super Bowl XL during his first NFL stint coaching the Seahawks’ defensive backs.
