The Chargers made their first player transactions of 2017, signing six members of the practice squad to reserve/future contracts. Players who were not on an active roster at the end of the season are eligible to sign a reserve/future contract, and revert to the active roster at the start of the new league year.
Here are the six players the Bolts inked:
T Brett Boyko – Boyko is a 6-6, 301-pound tackle who appeared in four preseason games with the Chargers before being waived during the final roster reduction. However, he returned as a member of the practice squad in early October. A standout at UNLV, Boyko spent all of 2015 on the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad.
CB Randall Evans – A 6-0, 195-pound product out of Kansas State, Philadelphia selected Evans with the 196th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He spent the majority of his rookie year on the Eagles practice squad before being promoted to the active roster and playing in the season finale. Evans spent the 2016 offseason in Philly before being waived toward the end of the preseason. Originally a walk on at Kansas State, the 24-year old appeared in 51 games with 31 starts for the Wildcats, totaling 210 tackles, seven interceptions and 35 passes defensed. He was named a first-team All-Big 12 pick in 2014 after leading the team with four interceptions and 14 passes defensed. Evans signed to the Chargers practice squad on Dec. 7.
CB Mike Lee – After spending a week with the team in late August, Lee returned to the Bolts on Nov. 9. The 6-1, 185-pound cornerback initially joined the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2015, and ended that year on the Eagles practice squad. Lee totaled 41 tackles, eight passes defensed and three interceptions as a senior at Fort Valley State in 2014
LB Chris McCain – A 6-5, 236-pound linebacker out of Cal, McCain joined the Chargers in late November. He’s appeared in 20 games NFL since signing as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2014. McCain recorded five tackles and one sack in 10 games as a rookie and then had one sack in eight games last year. He was traded to New Orleans before the start 2016, and appeared in two games for the Saints.
S Adrian McDonald – The Houston product was a fixture on the practice squad for all of 2016 after impressing the Bolts throughout the preseason and training camp. McDonald recorded a school-record 17 interceptions over four seasons, and also tallied 301 career tackles and seven forced fumbles.
TE Jake McGee – McGee was the other member of the practice squad for the entire season. He joined the Chargers on Sept. 5 after spending time with the Oakland Raiders. The 6-5, 250-pound tight end split his collegiate career between Virginia and Florida.
