Isaac Shewmaker enters his second season as a defensive quality control for the Chargers in 2022. He came to the City of Angels for his first NFL experience after five seasons at the collegiate level.
In his first year with the Bolts, Shewmaker aided the coaching staff in the defense's transition to a 3-4 base front scheme, primarily contributing to the organization and day-to-day operation of the defensive coaching staff, specifically the secondary group. As a unit, the Chargers' defense ranked third in the NFL with a conference-best 19 forced fumbles.
Shewmaker joined the Chargers after five years in the NCAA's Southeastern Conference. In 2020, he served under Chargers Secondary Coach Derrick Ansley at the University of Tennessee in a defensive graduate assistant role, as Ansley was Tennessee's defensive coordinator. The Volunteers kicked off the 2020 season with back-to-back wins over nationally-ranked SEC opponents.
Prior his time in Knoxville, Tenn., Shewmaker was a defensive analyst (2019) and defensive assistant (2016-18) at the University of Alabama, helping the Crimson Tide make appearances in the College Football Playoff in each of his three seasons as an undergraduate defensive assistant. In his four years aiding Alabama's coaching staff, the Crimson Tide claimed two SEC crowns, won four College Football Playoff games and defeated No. 3 Georgia in the 2018 CFP National Championship. Shewmaker capped his time in Tuscaloosa, Ala., with a win over 14th-ranked Michigan in the Citrus Bowl to culminate the Crimson Tide's 2019 season.
Shewmaker graduated from Alabama in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in education.
A native of Lexington, Ky., Shewmaker is an alumnus of Lexington Christian Academy High School.
