Staff Sergeant Wallace Fanene entered the United States Army through Fort Benning Georgia where he would complete his initial basic combat training and advanced individual training. Upon completion he would join the legions of infantrymen to graduate from Sandhill "Home of the Infantry." SSG Fanene joined his unit at Schofield Barracks, Hawai'i where he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. It was with the Tropic Lightning Division that Wallace served his first 15-month combat deployment to Afghanistan as an E4 Specialist serving as a gunner in 2004. Staff Sergeant Fanene made his second and last combat deployment to Iraq in 2006 where he served as a non-commissioned officer leading soldiers on combat patrols in Iraq.
On September 8, 2007 Staff Sergeant Fanene sustained injuries while on a combat patrol that would leave him with an amputated arm and leg. He was airlifted off the battlefield and woke up in a hospital bed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Wallace received care for 2 weeks there before joining his wife Scarlet and 6-month-old daughter in San Diego, California at Balboa Navy Medical Center.
After a year of rehabilitation, Fanene medically retired from the Army and moved to Temecula, California where he enjoys spending time with his family, studying Jiu jitsu, and eating an occasional California burrito. He is currently obtaining a degree in business while supporting his wife in nursing school and two children in elementary school.
For his bravery, Staff Sergeant Fanene was awarded a Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal with V-Device, and 3 Army Achievement Medals.
We thank Staff Sergeant Fanene for his commitment and service to our great nation.
