Sergeant William A. Abel (Vietnam 1969 – 1970) led a combat infantry squad in the An Do Valley, Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam. His duties included defense of the platoon, day patrols in the area including the surrounding hills, and night Hawk missions including night patrols and staging ambush sites along enemy trails.
Sergeant Abel received a Bronze Star for "Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces" in the summer of 1970 for action taken on while on night duty.
The last few weeks of Sergeant Abel's tour he was a member of a small group of NCO's tasked to teach the local militias, known as the Popular Force, basic infantry weapons. There, he continued his instructions with a focus on the M16 rifle.
