McConnaughey was promoted from area scout to national scout in April 2008. He now scouts various assigned regions around the country, primarily in the west and southwest. He also worked for National Football Scouting in 1997 as an area scout in the northwest before being hired by the Chargers.
McConnaughey played wide receiver at Spokane Falls Community College, the University of Oregon and Central Arkansas from 1975-79. Enshrined in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges and Spokane CC Halls of Fame, he was all-conference at Spokane Falls and Central Arkansas.
McConnaughey signed with the New Orleans Saints in 1981 as a rookie free agent. He was released in Sept. and signed with the New York Jets in '82. Released by the Jets before the '82 season, he signed with the USFL’s New Jersey Generals and was a starting wide receiver from 1983-84. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in '84, but was released after camp. He signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 1985, but was placed on injured reserve, ending his playing career.
McConnaughey was a science teacher and coach in Washington state for 11 years, including nine seasons as the head football coach at Federal Way High. He also coached receivers for three seasons Spokane CC and Central Arkansas.
McConnaughey was born in Amarillo, Texas and now resides in Federal Way. Wife, Sheri, is a recreation administrator for senior programs for the City of Tukwila. They have a son, Donny, and a daughter, Monica, who is a sophomore volleyball player at Lower Columbia CC in Longview, Wash.
