Bio

Kaeding (6-0, 187) is an nine-year kicker in his ninth year with the Chargers.

The NFL’s most-accurate kicker of all-time (.865), Nate Kaeding endured a mentally and physically-demanding season in 2011. Shortly after he sent the season’s opening kickoff airborn, Minnesota’s Percy Harvin took it back for 103 yards and a touchdown just 15 seconds into the season. Worse for Kaeding, while attempting to stop Harvin during the return, Kaeding planted his left leg and his ACL gave way, bringing a premature end to his ’11 season.  After nearly a full year of rehab, Kaeding’s leg is back to 100 percent and he’s looking forward to extending his career as the NFL’s most accurate kicker. Kaeding heads into 2012 having made 76 of his last 77 regular-season field goal tries from 40 yards or closer. He made the Pro Bowl in 2009 after going 32 of 35, a franchise single-season record for FG percentage (.914), and he scored a team-record 146 points. He also made a personal-best 20 in a row to close out the ’09 regular season. An avid golfer, several years ago Kaeding enlisted the services of local golf pro, Derek Uyeda, to help improve his leg swing. Uyeda attends Kaeding’s workouts, videotapes his kicks and together they analyze his form and mechanics. Kaeding also sought the help of Jan Stenerud, one of the best NFL kickers of all-time, and he’s trained at St. Vincent’s in Indianapolis, where professional trainers worked with him on maximizing his physical strengths.Kaeding is still renowned in his native Iowa. In July 2009, the Cedar Rapids Kernels minor-league baseball team invited him to a game and had him kick autographed footballs to the crowd between innings. He is also part-owner of the Short’s Burgers and Shine restaurant in Iowa City. And in college, Bob’s Your Uncle Pizza and Cafe, named a pizza after the former Hawkeye standout.Kaeding and wife, Samantha, have two sons, Jack and Wyatt. Samantha is a former school teacher. Nate earned a teaching certificate in secondary education from the University of Iowa and completed the Character Education Certification Program at the University of San Diego.

The NFL’s most-accurate kicker of all-time (.865), Nate Kaeding was 23-of-28 for the Chargers in 2010. It included a career-high five made field goals in an NBC Sunday Night Football game at Indianapolis in November during which he drilled a season-long 50 yarder. Kaeding missed three games last season due to a groin injury that initially surfaced in practice prior to the ’10 Pro Bowl, and three of his five misses in 2010 were on attempts of 50 yards or longer.

Kaeding now heads into 2011 having made 76 of his last 77 regular-season field goal tries from 40 yards or closer.

Kaeding made the Pro Bowl in 2009 after going 32 of 35, a new franchise single-season record for FG percentage (.914). He scored a team-record 146 points and made a personal-best 20 FGs in a row to close out the regular season. Unfortunately he suffered the above-mentioned groin injury and missed the all-star game.

Kaeding is an avid golfer. Looking to improve his leg swing several years ago, he enlisted the services of local golf pro, Derek Uyeda, to videotape and analyze his kicking. The idea was born while golfing with fellow special teamers David Binn and Mike Scifres. Uyeda attends Kaeding’s workouts and films his kicking. After he’s finished, the two review the tape so that Nate can improve his kicking mechanics.

Looking to do whatever he can to get a leg up, Kaeding also struck up a friendship with Jan Stenerud, one of the greatest NFL kickers of all-time. And he’s trained at St. Vincent’s in Indianapolis, where professional trainers workedwith him on maximizing his physical strengths, and a sports psychologist helped with his mental approach to the game.

A beneficiary of Kaeding’s success has been the Ronald McDonald House Charities in San Diego. Since 2008, fans have been able to make pledges to the Ronald McDonald House based on the number of successful kicks Kaeding makes. Fans who make donations are then entered into a drawing for a chance to win prizes. Kaeding has also served as a spokesperson and made personal appearances on behalf of Ronald McDonald House Charities. The RHMC provides a comfortable place to stay for families whose children face and are being treated for lifethreatening illnesses.

Kaeding is still renowned in his native Iowa. In July 2009, the Cedar Rapids Kernels minor-league baseball team invited Kaeding to a game and had him kick autographed footballs to the crowd between innings. He is part-owner of the Short’s Burgers and Shine restaurant in Iowa City. And in college, Bob’s Your Uncle Pizza and Cafe, named a pizza after the former Hawkeye standout.

Kaeding and wife, Samantha, have two sons, Jack and Wyatt. Samantha is a former school teacher. Nate earned a teaching certificate in secondary education from the University of Iowa and completed the Character Education Certification Program at the University of San Diego.
