Bio

Johnnie Troutman gets a rare second opportunity to be a rookie in 2013. The Chargers’ fifth-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft from Penn State, Troutman had surgery for a pectoral injury prior to the draft and spent the entire 2012 season on the “Reserve-Non-Football Injury” list. Healed, Troutman is expected to vie for playing time in 2013.

The reason the Chargers were able to overlook Troutman’s injury and still select him in the fifth round was the fact that he started his last three seasons at left guard for the Nittany Lions without allowing a sack. Troutman was credited for throwing 38 touchdown-resulting blocks during his career, and as a senior in 2011, he wasn’t flagged for a single penalty. During his junior and senior seasons, Penn State led the Big Ten in fewest sacks allowed. Troutman was an honorable mention All-Big Ten pick in ’11 and he was named the Brooks-Irvine Memorial Football Club of New Jersey’s Division I College Player of the Year.

TRANSACTION HISTORY: Fifth-round pick (147), April 28, 2012...signed May 11.

2012: Spent entire season on “Reserve-Non-Football Injury” list while recovering from pectoral surgery.

COLLEGE: Selected to play in 2012 Senior Bowl...as senior, shared team’s Richard Maginnis Memorial Award as outstanding offensive lineman who exemplifies spirit, dedication and commitment to program...started 32 of last 38 games, including 13 as senior when Nittany Lions led Big Ten and ranked 18th in nation for fewest sacks allowed...redshirted in 2007...played at Penn State from 2008-11...graduated with degree in African and African-American studies.

PERSONAL: Born in Trenton, N.J....three-time All-Burlco/ Olympic-Patriot Football Conference pick at Pemberton Township High in Brown Mills, N.J....twice named to New Jersey All-Group III squad...team captain as senior while being named all-state and All-South Jersey...played on both offensive and defensive lines.
