Bio

In March, the Chargers signed former Dallas Cowboys tight end John Phillips to a three-year deal.

Phillips is a 6-5, 251-pounder who can do all things required of the tight end, block and catch the football, as well as contribute on special teams. In four seasons with the Cowboys, he caught 30 passes for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while racking up 22 tackles on special teams.

Phillips is a native of Hot Springs, Virginia, a small-town in the middle of the Allegheny Mountains, about 200 miles southwest of Washington D.C. Hot Springs doesn’t have a stoplight and Phillips grew up enjoying hunting and fishing in its rural environment. He’s hunted since childhood, pursuing everything from deer, turkey, bobcats and even bears. He also enjoys fly fishing in the rivers of Bath County and bass fishing from his cousin’s boat.

One of Phillips’ closest friends is St. Louis Rams defensive end Chris Long, who was the No. 2 overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. In college, Phillips and Long shared a house with retired New York Giant Chris Swinton, New England’s Rasi Dowling and Chicago’s Nate Collins.
