Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith knew he was giving up a lot last April when he brokered a trade with Chicago to move up 25 spots in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft to select safety Eric Weddle from Utah. Smith also knew he was getting a lot, and that’s exactly what Weddle proved during his rookie season.

2007: Turned in series of big plays in first half of first career NFL regular season game vs. Chicago…all four were third-down plays that helped stall Chicago drives…on consecutive series in first half, recorded one-yard tackle for loss on 3rd and 14 play, helped stall next two drives with quarterback pressures on third down plays and lastly, ended fourth Bears drive with five-yard sack of Rex Grossman on a 3rd-and-9 play…helped end Broncos fourth-quarter drive on downs Week 5 at Denver when he and Eric Quentin Jammer combined for third-down tackle for loss (-3 yards) of Travis Henry…on ensuing drive, Michael Turner scored on 74-yard TD run to give Bolts 41-3 lead…recorded first interception of career deep in Chargers’ territory to put final seal on 35-10 victory over Houston Oct. 28…two-yard tackle for loss on second-and-23 play in first quarter vs. Indianapolis Nov. 11 led to Antonio Cromartie interception on following play…in scoreless game Nov. 25 vs. Baltimore, broke up pass on third-down play to force punt…Bolts kicked field goal on ensuing possession for 3-0 lead…logged huge third-quarter interception on third-and-three play from Chargers’ four-yard line in AFC Divisional Playoff win at Indianapolis…after Chargers had scored on opening possession of third quarter to take 14-10 lead, intercepted pass on Indy’s next drive at Chargers’ two-yard line with one-handed catch to prevent Colts from scoring go-ahead touchdown…Chargers would go on to win the playoff game by four points, 28-24.
PERSONAL: Born in Fontana, California...two-time Mt. Baldy League Offensive and Defensive MVP, three-time all-league choice, two-time All-CIF selection and league Rookie of Year at Alta Loma High School in Alta Loma, California...intercepted five passes, forced five fumbles, rushed for 22 scores and threw five touchdown passes as senior...helped lead Braves to 2000 Mt. Baldy League championship...lettered in basketball and baseball.
