Bio

The Chargers knew Brandon Taylor was a special player, so it was no surprise when the team engineered a trade with Miami to move up five spots in the third round to select the former LSU Tiger with the 73rd overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Taylor’s rookie season in San Diego was spent primarily learning on the practice field and in the classroom. He waited patiently for an opportunity to play on Sundays and that chance arose late in the season when he appeared in four games, two of which the Chargers won. Taylor also earned his first NFL start on Dec. 23 against the New York Jets, but the rookie suffered a severe knee injury in the game and he finished the year on the “Reserve-Injured” list.

Taylor grew up in Franklinton, La., the second-youngest of Curtis and Annette Taylor’s nine children. He was groomed and toughened by two older brothers, Curtis and Jhyryn, both of whom played for the Tigers. Taylor charted his own path in football, making a challenging switch from cornerback to strong safety. His willingness to sacrifice for the team made him one of LSU’s most popular players. Before his senior season, head coach Les Miles called Taylor into his office and informed the team captain that he’d been chosen to wear the Tigers’ coveted No. 18 jersey. In a tradition that was born in 2003, the LSU coaching staff picks one player who exemplifies character and leadership to wear the No. 18 jersey each season. Taylor also had another honor bestowed upon him by teammates as he was selected to stand in the rally circle before each game to fire up the team. Both gestures were tremendous honors for the Louisiana native.

Brandon’s brother, Curtis, played on LSU’s National Championship team in 2007 and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2008. He’s currently playing for the Arizona Cardinals.

TRANSACTION HISTORY: Third-round pick (73), April 27, 2012...signed May 15.

2012: NFL debut Dec. 2 vs. Cincinnati...made first NFL start Dec. 23 at New York Jets and shared seven-yard sack with defensive end Kendall Reyes...later suffered knee injury vs. Jets...placed on “Reserve-Injured” Dec. 26.

COLLEGE: Team captain as senior for nation’s second leading defense in total yards and points allowed...finished career with 160 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and four interceptions... played at LSU from 2008-11...general studies major.

PERSONAL: Born in Bogalusa, La....All-America and all-state cornerback at Franklinton (La.) High...Louisiana 4A Defensive Player of Year as senior in 2007.
