Texas vs. Nation College All-Star Game, Eagle Stadium, Allen, Texas.
Broadcast: Fox
The Chargers were aggressive this offseason in their search for wide receivers and kick returners and their search landed former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Micheal Spurlock.
In 2007, Spurlock became a hero in Tampa Bay when he ended 32 years of futility by scoring the franchise’s first-ever touchdown on a kickoff return.
Spurlock owns a career 25.1-yard kickoff return average and he’s combined to post three returns for scores: two kickoffs and a punt.
Spurlock hails from Indianola, Miss., the same hometown as legendary blues guitarist B.B. King. As a high schooler, he set a state record when he scored all 71 of his team’s points in a game, throwing nine touchdown passes, scoring two more TDs on the ground and kicking every one of his team’s extra points. An outstanding prep career led to a scholarship from the University of Mississippi where he was recruited by Rich Bisaccia, who later coached Spurlock in Tampa Bay and is now the Assistant Head Coach-Special Teams for the Chargers. Spurlock had the dubious distinction of following two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Eli Manning at Ole Miss.
Spurlock and his wife, Danielle, have four daughters, E’Landria, Griselle, Macie and Payton. Having lived through some of the cruelties of life in the NFL, Spurlock was cut by Arizona in 2007 while his wife was eight-and-a-half months pregnant and shortly after the couple had purchased a home. He then signed with Tampa Bay, but on the day he called to inform the Buccaneers that his wife was set to deliver and he needed to return to Arizona, they also told him he was about to be released. Thankfully Spurlock re-signed shortly thereafter and remained with Tampa Bay for the better part of the next five seasons.
Spurlock enjoys collecting movies. He started in college and his collection now includes several hundred titles. Sundays are movie day in the Spurlock’s home as they gather to watch movies after attending church.
