In May, the Chargers signed former Carolina Panthers safety Tre Boston to a one-year contract. Boston spent his first three NFL seasons (2014-16) with Carolina after the Panthers drafted him in the fourth round in 2014 out of North Carolina. In three seasons with the Panthers, he played in 42 games with 16 starts, recording 85 tackles, three interceptions – including two in 2016 – 10 passes defended and a pair of sacks.

Boston has also played in five postseason games (two starts) during his career. He helped lead Carolina to an appearance in Super Bowl 50 after the 2015 NFL season, recording a sack and an interception along the way. Boston also had a pick for the Panthers during the 2014 NFL Playoffs.

2016: Played in 15 games with a career-high 10 starts at safety...tallied career highs with 50 tackles, two sacks, five passes defensed and two interceptions…contributed to a defense that ranked second in the NFL with 47 sacks and tied for fourth with 17 interceptions…placed on injured reserve before the regular season finale Dec. 27 with a knee injury… Notched first career sack at Denver Sept. 8, bringing down Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian for a 10-yard loss in the fourth quarter…Recorded second career sack vs. Tampa Bay Oct. 10, dropping Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston for a nine-yard loss in the fourth quarter…Tallied first interception of the season vs. Kansas City Nov. 13, picking off Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith and returning the ball 22 yards…Intercepted Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson in the second quarter at Seattle Dec. 4.

2015: Played in all 16 games with one start…posted 19 tackles and one pass defensed…contributed to unit that ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in total defense for the fourth consecutive season…unit joins Seattle as the only two teams to field a top-10 defense in each of the last four seasons…Played free safety in NFC Divisional Playoff versus Seattle Jan. 17, NFC Championship versus Arizona Jan. 24 and Super Bowl 50 versus Denver…recorded four tackles, one sack, one interception, one fumble recovery and one pass defensed…Started at free safety vs. Tampa Bay Jan. 3 and recorded season-high five tackles…Sacked Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson for a loss of eight yards in NFC Divisional Playoff vs. Seattle Jan. 17…Recovered a fumble forced by Charles Johnson in NFC Championship vs. Arizona Jan. 24…part of defense that forced seven turnovers, most by any team in a playoff game since Green Bay had eight in 2001 NFC Divisional Playoff at St. Louis Jan. 20, 2002.

Started at free safety in NFC Wild Card versus Arizona Jan. 3 and NFC Divisional Playoff at Seattle Jan. 10...recorded three tackles and one interception...
