Modesto, Calif., native Isaiah Burse returns for his third season with the Chargers in 2017.

Modesto, Calif., native Isaiah Burse returns for his third season with the Chargers in 2017. A former practice squad player, Burse appeared in nine games for the Bolts in 2016, taking over as the team’s featured kick and punt returner midway thru the season.

Burse is both blessed and thankful for the opportunity that has been afforded him in the NFL. The product of a broken home, Burse was adopted by Mark and Michelle Dobbins when he was just a sophomore at Modesto (Calif.) Christian High. Dobbins was an assistant coach at Modesto Christian who also ran an athlete-performance program.

Burse excelled as a prep at Modesto Christian, earning state player of the year honors after leading the Crusaders to a 15-0 record and a CIF smallschool state title as a senior. A dual-threat quarterback, Burse finished his high school career with more than 4,000 yards and 61 touchdowns rushing, while racking up nearly 7,000 yards and 87 touchdowns through the air.

With stability for the first time in his life, Burse parlayed his success at Modesto Christian into a college career at Fresno State where he earned a degree in criminology corrections while racking up nearly 6,000 yards and 22 touchdowns on the football field.

Burse’s birth mother resides in Arizona, while his father resides in California’s Central Valley. Burse has a sister and two brothers, but he credits the Dobbins’ and their son, Aaron, for helping him find success in life.

In his free time, Burse enjoys movies, video games and playing basketball.

A natural right-hander, Burse taught himself to become ambidextrous. He did so by spending time each day writing with his left hand to make it stronger.
