Shortly before the start of the 2016 season, the Chargers scooped up former New York Giants fourth-round pick Andre Williams after the running back was put on waivers.
The former Boston College product was selected by the Giants with 113th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He quickly burst onto the scene, becoming the first rookie to lead New York in rushing in 15 seasons as he racked up 721 yards and seven scores.
Compactly built at 6-0 and 220 pounds, Williams is a physical running back who seeks out contact and punishes would-be tacklers.
Williams and backfield mate Melvin Gordon are both past winners of the Doak Walker Award, which is annually given to the top running back in college football. Williams won the award following his senior season in 2013, and Gordon claimed the award a year later at Wisconsin.
