Pre-Game Analysis

AFC West supremacy is on the line this weekend as the Los Angeles Chargers (7-6) head to Kansas City, Mo., to take on the Chiefs (7-6) in a primetime affair on Saturday, Dec. 16. Greg Gumbel, Trent Green and Jamie Erdahl will be on the call for NFL Network (KCBS2 local) with kickoff slated for 5:25 p.m. PT at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chargers enter Week 15 winners of seven of their last nine games, including four in a row. The seven wins in a nine-game span is the best mark for the organization since 2010. The Bolts have put together four straight stellar offensive performances, compiling over 400 yards in each contest and outscoring their opponents, 131-53. The defensive has mirrored the offensive success as the Bolts have held their last three opponents to under 300 yards of total offense. That is the best mark for the Chargers since 2012.

Kansas City ended a four-game skid by defeating divisional rival Oakland, 26-15. Through the first 13 games of the 2017 season, quarterback Alex Smith has completed 293 of his 436 pass attempts (67.2%) for a career-high 3,507 yards with 23 touchdowns and five interceptions (104.4 rating). Rookie running back Kareem Hunt has rushed 218 times for 1,046 yards (4.8 avg.) with five rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns. Tight end Travis Kelce leads all KC pass catchers with 73 receptions for 945 yards (12.9 avg.) with seven touchdowns.

Kansas City holds a 59-55-1 lead in the all-time series against the Chargers and a 34-23 record at home. The Chiefs have gotten the better of the Chargers as of late, winning the last seven matchups. The last meeting at Arrowhead was a 33-27, overtime thriller to open the 2016 season. The last victory for the Chargers at Kansas City was a 41-38 triumph on Nov. 24, 2013.

Offensively, Philip Rivers and Keenan Allen have paired up to ignite the Chargers. In his last three games, Rivers has thrown for 1,097 yards on 76- for-107 passing with six touchdowns and no interceptions. He has posted three straight games of a rating above 100 for the first time since 2014. Allen registered his fourth straight 100-yard receiving game which is tied with Antonio Brown for the longest streak this season and is the second-best streak in franchise history.

Defensively, the Chargers have been forcing turnovers at an alarming rate. Since the 0-4 start, the Bolts lead the NFL with 15 interceptions. In the last five contests, the Chargers have picked off 11 passes and have scored two touchdowns on those interceptions, which also leads the league. The Bolts have allowed 225 points this season to rank second in the NFL.
