A former Pro Bowl cornerback and All-Pro in his own right, Cris Dishman brings those same qualities as the Chargers’ assistant secondary coach. After three seasons working alongside Steve Wilks, Dishman will now share secondary duties with Ron Meeks. In 2011, Dishman enjoyed watching safety Eric Weddle earn Pro Bowl and All-Pro accolades after leading the NFL and setting a career high with seven interceptions.
A graduate of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship Program, Dishman worked training camps with the Miami Dolphins in ’06, Oakland Raiders in ’07 and Chargers in ’08 before landing a full-time gig in San Diego in 2009.
Dishman played football and ran track at Purdue, earning All-Big Ten honors as a senior. In 1988, the Houston Oilers selected him in the fifth-round of the NFL Draft. Dishman played 13 professional seasons, including two in Washington (1997-98) when Norv Turner was the Redskins’ head coach. He also played for Kansas City and Minnesota, retiring in 2000 with 43 career interceptions and three touchdown returns.
Dishman had a Pro Bowl and All-Pro season in 1991 after registering a career-high six interceptions. In ’93 he had another six-interception season and forced a career-high four fumbles. In ’97 (Washington), he was selected to a second Pro Bowl after intercepting four passes, including one return for a touchdown.
A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Dishman was inducted into the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009
Dishman and wife, Carmen, have three sons, Cris, Coy and Ethan, and a daughter, Bianca.
