Turner: I still give the credit to the players

Posted Dec 13, 2012

Norv Turner speaks with the media after practice

Head Coach Norv Turner

On the rain:

“It was fine. We had a mix out there and it was good for us. I thought we got the work done that we needed to get done. We continued looking at the things we need to handle against Carolina.”

On the offensive line with Mike Harris back:

“He was full in terms of being able to practice. I’m not sure if he is ready to go play yet. We will see where he is at tomorrow. I would assume we will play this game like we did last week (the same guys on the offensive line).”

On the scenario if Donald Butler and Demorrio Williams are unable to play, whether Andrew Gachkar or Gary Guyton would start:

“First of all, I would not expect either of the guys you are talking about to play. Guyton will have to play. How we work that in, we are still working on that.”

On struggling against the NFC South this season and what makes that division so good:

“I would have to break down each game and tell you why we did not perform in each of those games. They are good football teams.”

On Malcom Floyd’s progression with the Chargers:

“He is doing well. He is probably the reason the numbers are better, because he has played every game over the last three years. When he has played extended periods he has had very good numbers. He just has not been able to play for 16 games. He is on his way to playing an entire season. He has actually played better in other stretches but he didn’t stay healthy for an entire year.”

On the dynamic of Danario Alexander in the offense:

“He is a playmaker. He is making big plays for us. Anytime you get a guy in that gives you a matchup look, it helps you.”

On expecting so much of Danario Alexander this year:

“He is a guy that got cut from St. Louis and was not on a roster when we signed him whatever week it was, week six or seven. I think if you would say you expect a guy like that to come in and have a great production, you are probably dreaming. I would say yes, it is a pleasant surprise what he was able to do. He was given an opportunity and he made the most of it.”

On the job the coaches are doing by preparing newly-signed players to play immediately:

“It is not an easy deal. I think our staff has put in a lot of extra time to get all of these guys. Whether it be a young player or guys you are signing off the street in these situations. I still give the credit to the players because it is not easy for them to come in completely cold, not know a system and not know the people around them then go out and play and be productive. Obviously we had it with (Reggie) Wells on the right side of the line last week we’ve had it at a lot of different spots.”

On Takeo Spikes being a factor with the weak inside linebackers:

“Guys have to go play. Takeo is a great role model for these guys, but if guys are going out and playing well, it is a credit to what they are doing, getting prepared and then going out and playing.”

On wide receiver Eddie Royal:

“I would not expect Eddie Royal to be active for this week.”
