Telesco's First Draft with Chargers; Bolts Set with 11th Choice & Seven Picks Overall

Posted Apr 18, 2013

Here's all you need to know about this year's NFL Draft for the San Diego Chargers.

New Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco will conduct his first draft with the San Diego Chargers beginning Thursday, April 25 at 5 p.m. PT.  The 2013 NFL Draft commences from New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.

The Chargers currently hold seven selections, one each in all seven rounds, including the 11th overall pick in the first round.Round 1 of the NFL Draft takes place Thursday, April 25 while Rounds 2-3 are scheduled for Friday, April 26, starting at 3:30 p.m. PT.  The draft will conclude with Rounds 4-7 on Saturday, April 27.  The final day begins at 9:00 a.m. PT.Both the NFL Network and ESPN will televise the draft in its entirety, while Chargers fans can track the draft online at www.Chargers.com and receive draft updates through the team’s Twitter account (@Chargers).

XTRA Sports 1360, the Chargers’ flagship radio station, will offer live coverage of all three days of the 2013 NFL Draft, including a live show from Chargers Park. Brian Wilson, Mike Costa and Eddie Pappani will anchor XTRA’s draft coverage with Judson Richards and former San Diego State quarterback Kevin O’Connell reporting from Chargers Park.

The NFL Draft follows a fan-friendly format with each team allotted 10 minutes per pick in the first round, seven minutes in the second round and five minutes each in Rounds 3-7.

The Chargers hold the No. 11 pick in the first round for the first time since 1972, however the team traded that pick on June 24, 1971 to the Green Bay Packers to acquire defensive tackle Kevin Hardy. That is the only other year that the Chargers have held the 11th overall selection.

All seven Chargers draftees from 2012 remained with the team in some capacity last season. First-round selection Melvin Ingram played in all 16 games with two starts. He finished the year tied for the team lead with 12 special teams tackles, while adding 29 stops and 18 quarterback pressures, tied for second- on the team on defense. Second-round choice Kendall Reyes also played in all 16 games while starting the last four at left defensive end. Reyes led the entire team in quarterback pressures (19) and quarterback hits (15), while ranking second among all defensive linemen in tackles (34) and sacks (5.5). Safety Brandon Taylor (third round), tight end Ladarius Green (fourth round) and center David Molk (seventh round) all saw limited action with the team. Guard Johnnie Troutman (fourth round) spent the year on the “Reserve-Non-Football Injury” list running back Edwin “Rock” Baker (seventh round) spent the majority of the year on the team’s practice squad. The Chargers did not have a sixth round pick in 2012, having dealt that selection and their original third-round pick (78) to move up five spots in the third round to select Taylor.

The Chargers have drafted a total of 52 players in the first round of the NFL draft. The list includes nine defensive ends, eight cornerbacks, seven running backs and linebackers, five wide receivers, four offensive tackles, three quarterbacks, two defensive tackles, tight ends and safeties, and one guard, center and fullback. One of the two safeties the Chargers drafted in the first round, Jim Hill from Texas A&I in 1968, will be in New York on Friday, April 26 to announce the Chargers’ picks in the second and third rounds. Hill currently resides in Los Angeles where he’s the lead sports anchor and sports director at KCBS-TV.
