Norv Turner: They are playing at a high level

Posted Dec 27, 2012

Norv Turner talks to the media after practice

Head Coach Norv Turner

On what he expects to see from the Raiders in terms of their quarterback situation:

“That is kind of up in the air. Obviously we have tape on both guys that are talking about playing and we will prepare a little bit for each one.”

On the team playing for pride and the makeup of the team:

“The biggest thing to me is that we have great veteran leadership, guys who have played a lot of football and understand how to prepare and keep preparing. We have a lot of young guys that feel themselves getting better. They know they are growing as football players. They are enjoying it. They are playing at a high level and having success. It is fun to go out, play and compete and beat somebody. You look at what our defensive front did. They went and got 11 sacks. They went out, beat those guys and tackled their quarterback. It was a fun day for them.”

On change on the injury front:

“I’m hopeful that both (Donald Butler and Ronnie Brown) will play. I know they both want to play.”

On differences between this Raiders team right now and where they were at the beginning of the season:

“They are a very physical team on defense. I think they have, through the ups and downs of the season, gotten better defensively. They have had a lot of different guys play during the middle of the year, but I do believe they are doing the right things defensively. It gives you a chance to be successful. I think their players have fought. They play extremely hard. We know they want to run the ball. They ran the ball for over 200 yards against Kansas City two weeks ago. We know they are capable of running the ball. We are going to have to do a great job to stop the run. Off that is the pass.”

On some of the guys possibly being active because of Spikes’ hamstring injury:

“Like I said, it depends on what happens with Takeo and I would anticipate that Takeo will play. So if there’s a way to get Jonas (Mouton) up, we will, but there are a lot of different things that go into it.”

On the play of Corey Lynch:

“Corey was a late addition and I’m just thankful we have him because he’s done an awful lot of things for us in the kicking game. He was brought in here as a guy who was going to play on special teams and he’s obviously contributed a great deal other than that. It is a chance for (Sean) Cattouse. He’s a guy who we liked in camp, but he had the injury. Now we have him back and he’s dressing for a game, so it’s obviously going to be exciting for him.”

On Micheal Spurlock being named special teams player of the week:

“He’s been a good returner wherever he’s been. Sometimes you get caught up in the numbers and what you’re trying to do with you football team and I’m glad he was available and we were able to get him back, because he has given us a lift.”

On what he may tell the team on Sunday:

“I’m going to talk to the team tomorrow, I talk to the team Saturday night and it’s usually related to where we are in terms of our preparation or who we’re playing. There will be some good thought put into it and I think that as a staff, we’ll deliver a good message.”

On the Pro Bowl selections:

“Nothing would surprise me when you start getting into the way the Pro Bowl is done now with all the variety of voting. When you don’t have success as a group and as a team, you tend to not have as much success in those areas. We tell our guys that there’s plenty to go around for everybody. Eric (Weddle) probably hasn’t had much of a different year than he had a year ago when he made the Pro Bowl and was picked for a bunch of All-Pro teams, but that’s the way it works.”
