Johnson: It is extremely frustrating

Posted Nov 26, 2012

LB Jarret Johnson talks with the media on Monday morning

Linebacker Jarret Johnson

On the 4th and 29 play summing up the way the season has gone:

“You could say that. It is extremely frustrating. We were just in the locker room talking as a group of guys and we were having a hard time putting our finger on how or why we are in this situation. We do everything there is to do to win. We got them backed up, big play by (Antwan) Barnes, getting a sack. Then the inconsistent play, to come back and give up a check down for 29 yards to convert and give them an opportunity to kick a field goal, it is just extremely frustrating. I know as media you want something more dramatic than the old technique and fundamentals and all of that but that is what it was. We took bad angles. We didn’t get him (Ray Rice) boxed in when we had the opportunity to. He got out and did what great players do. He made a great play. He had a huge block and they got him over the line.”

On whether the Chargers defense was expecting a deep pass on the 4th and 29 play:

“Yes. They ran four verts with a check-down and our guys played deep like you should. That is what you want. You want to check them down and make the tackle. I practiced against that guy (Ray Rice) for five years and the worst thing you can do is give him an open field. You still have to get him down and we didn’t do it.”

On how this season is different than he expected and a way to pinpoint the struggles:

“I think everyone is pretty shocked at where we’re at. Coming in with the players that were here, the quarterback, the veteran leadership, the coaching staff, the additions in free agency; this is a team that should not be 4-7. It is pretty frustrating to see how hard everyone works, how hard our coaching staff works and the expectation for the season. We have gone out and shown them that we can be that team. On a consistent basis we just have not done it. This team has a history of winning, Phil (Philip Rivers) has proven that he is not a good quarterback, he is a great quarterback. For some reason as a group we just have not gone out and finished ball games. Besides the Atlanta and maybe the second Denver game you could say we were beaten but all the other ones we have been in, we had the opportunity to win. We just have not done it.”

On the experience of playing his old team:

“It was different. Obviously it was great to see everybody. I spent nine years there. It felt a little bit like training camp, standing there and looking across at that offense I practiced against every day. It was different but I wanted to beat those guys really bad. I had the opportunity but we just did not get it done.”

On feeling like the Chargers were going to win three quarters into the game:

“Yeah it felt good. We were up by 10 with seven minutes left. That is where you want to be. They are not a real pretty team, but they find a way to win. We just let them off the hook.”

On how the outcome of the Ravens game boded for the next game:

“That is the great part of the NFL. There are 16 games and we have another opportunity to go out and get a victory. That is the only thing that is going to change these questions. That is the only thing that will make us feel better as players, coaches and fans  is to go out and just get a win. We just got to get one win. I don’t care how we do it. I don’t care if we blow them out or win by one in overtime. It doesn’t matter. We just need to get a victory.”

On a specific reason why the Chargers are unable to complete a game:

“I can’t figure it out. If somebody knew everybody would want that answer. I don’t know why. It has been different reasons for different games. It is not a lack of focus or effort. I can’t figure it out. This is an extremely talented team. I was talking to Coach Harbaugh after the game and he was so complimentary of our guys and our staff and of how hard everybody plays, our front seven and how difficult they are, all of these different things and the weapons we have on offense. He just looked at me and said, ‘Man, I don’t know how y’all are in this spot.’ Yeah, you ought to be in our locker room. It is very frustrating because this is as good a group of guys and as good a group of coaches as I have ever been around. Because of that, the fans deserve more. As much work as the coaches put in, they deserve more on the field from the players. The players themselves deserve more. As hard as we work, we deserve to be in a better spot.”
