The San Diego Chargers are just days away from the hitting the field for the start of Training Camp and the 2012 National Football League season.
As with the start of every season, the fans’ excitement for the upcoming season leads to a long list of questions. Here is a quick summary of the current most frequently-asked questions heading into the 2012 season:
Can I still run in the Bolt to the Q 5k on Saturday?
o The second-annual Kaiser Permanente Bolt to the Q 5k on Saturday is SOLD OUT. However, folks can still sign up their kids from 7-8 a.m. Saturday morning for the 1k fun run and enjoy the post-race festivities. And while they’re there, they can check out the available season seats tagged for the team’s Select-A-Seat Day.
Why do I want to go the Chargers’ Select-A-Seat Day at the stadium?
o The team is holding a rare Select-A-Seat Day on Saturday morning at the stadium for prospective season ticket holders. Fans will see and can actually sit in the season seats that are available for the season. Season seats in a variety of locations and price categories are available for purchase, including a limited number of lower-level seats. Prices start at just $48 per game. The first 100 seats sold will receive one free commemorative trolley pass per seat for all home games. Each purchase will receive a free limited-edition Chargers Replica Micro-Helmet (one per account). Fans can enter the stadium through Gate A from 8:00 a.m. to noon.
When does Training Camp open?
o Chargers Training Camp kicks off for rookies and select veterans with the first practice on Monday, July 23. The first full-squad practice is Thursday, July 26.
I’m fired up. When can I come to Training Camp and watch my team practice?
o If you’re a season ticket holder, you may get an exclusive opportunity to come to the first full-squad practices on Thursday, July 26 or Friday, July 27. If not, the first practice open to general public is Saturday, July 28 at 4 p.m. Other practices open to the public are July 29 and 31 as well as August 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 11 and 12. Practice days and times can change, so we always suggest you check the updated information on the team’s website, Chargers.com.
I’ve never been to Training Camp. What am I going to see?
o You’ll see the coaching staff run the team through two hours of intense teaching sessions that include individual drills, 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 offense-versus-defense periods. You’ll be able to get close to the field and the players and hear just about everything you want and don’t want to hear. Every practice is intense and draining on the players, however there is no full-contact tackling. We save that for our opponents.
Is the team practicing at Qualcomm Stadium again this year?
o Twice. The team will practice at Qualcomm Stadium on Wednesday night, Aug. 1 and the team’s annual FanFest returns to the stadium on Saturday, Aug. 4. Parking and admission are free for both events.
We’re first-time ticket holders. What are the most important things we need to know about attending a Chargers game?
o A Chargers game is a full day’s experience. If you choose to drive to the stadium and tailgate, get there early and carpool. Our parking lot fills up quickly. We always recommend taking the Trolley and partying in the Power Party in section F2 in the parking lot (beginning in the regular season). If you take the Trolley, you don’t have to worry about driving, parking or packing for your tailgate. You can pack light and enjoy all the food and beverage in the Power Party and watch the pregame shows and early games.
o When you’re ready to head into the stadium, we suggest getting to the gates no later than 30 minutes before kickoff. All ticket holders will be screened by metal detectors, so we strongly suggest you get to the gates early.
o Our first game is a nationally-televised Thursday night game on August 9 against the Green Bay Packers. That game is also the Chargers’ annual Military Appreciation Night.
