Chargers sign Brinkley, Guyton; place Martin, Stuckey on “Reserve-Injured”

Posted Dec 12, 2012

The Chargers have re-signed running back Curtis Brinkley and added linebacker Gary Guyton to the active roster.  To make room for the two players on the roster, the team placed defensive end Vaughn Martin (groin) and safety and special teams standout Darrell Stuckey (hamstring) on “Reserve-Injured.”

Martin injured his groin during pregame warmups prior to last Sunday’s Chargers-Steelers game in Pittsburgh, while Stuckey re-aggravated an injured hamstring during the contest. Martin was the team’s second-leading tackler on the defensive line with 27 tackles for the year, while Stuckey was one of the squad’s top special teams performers with 12 stops, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.

Brinkley had been with the Chargers for the first 11 weeks of the 2012 season before he was released Nov. 29. He played in seven games with one start and was inactive for four others, seeing action at running back and as a kickoff returner.

Guyton is a fifth-year player who spent the first four years of his NFL career with the New England Patriots. He’s a 6-3, 250 pound outside linebacker who has 218 career tackles, 4.5 sacks and three interceptions, including a 59-yard touchdown return. Guyton has played in 60 NFL games and made 32 starts in the regular season and a pair of postseason starts. Guyton is a 27-year old native of Hinesville, Ga., and an alumnus of Georgia Tech. In 2008, Guyton ran the fastest 40-yard dash by a linebacker at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Brinkley will wear No. 36 for the Chargers, while Guyton will wear No. 53.

The Chargers also released wide receiver Kashif Moore from the practice squad and re-signed defensive end Logan Harrell.
