Chargers Sign Derek Cox

Posted Mar 14, 2013

The San Diego Chargers officially sign cornerback Derek Cox.

The Chargers have signed cornerback Derek Cox to a four-year contract, the team announced today.

The 26-year-old, 6-1, 195-pound cornerback is a former third-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars who racked up a team-leading 12 interceptions over the last four seasons (2009-12). His 12 picks during the past four seasons were more than double the next-closest Jaguars defender. Cox started and played in 12 games for the Jags in 2012, collecting 59 tackles, four picks and 16 passes defensed.

“We are very excited to add Derek to our football team,” said Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco. “I had the chance to watch him up close for four years while playing in the AFC South, and I think his combination of size, speed, ball skills and aggressiveness will fit perfectly in our secondary.”

“Derek’s a good, young football player who’s shown in his first few years that he’s got outstanding ball skills and a knack for making big plays,” added Head Coach Mike McCoy. “We think he’ll be a great addition to our defense and were looking forward to him getting here and going to work with his new coaches and teammates.”

A native of Greenville, N.C., Cox was a state champion football and baseball player at Rose High School in Greenville. As a collegian, he became a two-time team captain and a two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association choice at William & Mary before the Jaguars selected him with the 73rd pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

As a rookie, Cox started all 16 games for the Jags and led the team with four interceptions. As a second-year player in 2010, he was limited to 13 game and 11 starts, but again led the squad with four interceptions. Cox appeared in just six games in 2011, but returned to start 12 of 12 games played in 2012 and led the Jaguars with four interceptions.

His career totals include 47 games played with 44 starts, 203 tackles, 12 interceptions and 42 passes defensed.

Cox has a fraternal twin sister, Shannon, and his brother, Travis, played football at East Carolina. Cox was one of the Jaguars’ most-active players in the community in addition to his contributions on the football field. A member of the Ebony Expression Gospel Choir, he recorded a public service announcement for the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus to encourage kids to get involved in chorus. He also spoke at a number of programs focused on preventing teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS.
