Chargers Agree with Three

Posted Apr 8, 2013

The San Diego Chargers agreed to terms with WR Deon Butler, WR Dan DePalma and CB Cornelius Brown

The Chargers have agreed to terms with wide receivers Deon Butler and Dan DePalma and cornerback Cornelius Brown. Butler and Brown have both agreed to one-year contracts, while DePalma has agreed to a two-year deal.

Butler is a 5-10, 182-pound fourth-year alumnus of Penn State who has spent his entire NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks. Originally a third-round pick by Seattle in 2009 (91st overall), Butler has played in 35 games the last four seasons, catching 57 passes for 611 yards (10.7 average) and four touchdowns. He had his best receiving season for the Seahawks in 2010 when he caught a career-high 36 passes for 385 yards, including a career-long 63-yard touchdown catch against the Arizona Cardinals.

A native of Woodbridge, Virginia, Butler went to Penn State, where he left school as the Nittany Lions’ all-time leader with 179 catches, good for 2, 771 yards (second in school history) and 22 touchdowns (third in school annals).

DePalma is a 5-11, 192-pound first-year player who spent time on the New York Giants’ practice squad in each of the last two seasons. A graduate of West Chester (Pa.) University, DePalma originally signed with the New York Jets in July 2011 after the conclusion of the NFL Lockout and after being waived he spent the entire regular season on the Giants’ practice squad, which captured Super Bowl XLVI. He was waived by the Giants at the end of training camp in 2012, but re-joined their practice squad for the last five games of the season.

Brown joins the Chargers as a second-year player who spent time with the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts. A 5-11, 198-pounder, Brown signed with Chicago as an undrafted free agent from the University of Texas-El Paso. After the Bears released him in their final training camp cuts, the Colts signed him to their practice squad and no Nov. 1 elevated him to the active roster. Brown played in 10 games during that 201 season and collected 16 tackles and three passes defensed, along with nine special teams stops. Brown remained with the Colts in 2011 but missed the season injured and he returned to Chicago in 2012 but again was released during the Bears’ final roster cuts.
