Chargers Add Three to Offense

Posted Mar 13, 2013

The San Diego Chargers today signed offensive tackle King Dunlap, guard Chad Rinehart and tight end John Phillips.

The San Diego Chargers announced today the addition of three players to their offense, signing former Philadelphia Eagles tackle King Dunlap to a two-year contract, former Buffalo Bills guard Chad Rinehart to a one-year contract, and former Dallas Cowboys tight end John Phillips to a three-year contract.

Dunlap is a 6-9, 330-pound left tackle who started 12 of his 14 games played at left tackle for the Eagles in 2012. One of the tallest offensive linemen in NFL history, Dunlap is a versatile player who has also seen time at left guard and right tackle. Dunlap heads into his sixth NFL season having played in 52 career games with 19 career starts. He is a second generation NFL player. His father, King Dunlap IV, was a defensive tackle who was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1969. Dunlap played collegiately at Auburn before Philadelphia drafted him in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Dunlap’s sister, Victoria, is a former All-America and SEC Player of the Year from the University of Kentucky who is currently a forward for the WNBA’s Seattle Storm.

Rinehart is a 6-5, 321-pound versatile guard who is heading into his sixth NFL season. He is being reunited in San Diego with his former position coaches in Buffalo, Joe D’Alessandris and Andrew Dees. Rinehart was limited to seven games and two starts at right guard in 2012 due to an ankle injury that landed him on the “Reserve-Injured” list Nov. 2. He had started the two games prior to being injured and missed the Bills’ final nine contests. A native of Boone, Iowa and a graduate of Northern Iowa, Rinehart was a third-round pick of the Washington Redskins in 2008. He spent his first two seasons in the nation’s capital, seeing no game action as a rookie and starting four games during his second campaign. He split time in 2010 between the practice squads of the New York Jets and Bills before Buffalo signed him to their active roster in December. Rinehart remained with the Bills in 2011, playing in all 16 games with 12 starts, eight at right guard and four at left guard.

Phillips is a 6-5, 251-pound fifth-year pro who started eight of his 16 games played for the Cowboys in 2012. He caught eight passes for 55 yards and a touchdown in 2012 and has caught 30 balls for 218 yards and a pair of scores during his career. Phillips also racked up 22 tackles on the Cowboys’ special teams. The sixth-round pick in 2009 from the University of Virginia played in all 16 games with four starts as a rookie. He spent his second NFL season in 2010 on the “Reserve-Injured” list with a knee injury that was sustained in the Cowboys’ first preseason game. He returned in 2011 to play in all 16 games with seven starts. Phillips is a native of Hot Springs, Va., and was a first-team All-ACC pick for the Cavaliers.
