Over the past three years, wide receiver Malcom Floyd has shown continual improvement, and he’ll get a chance to continue to make his mark among Chargers pass catchers in 2007. Floyd, an “exclusive rights” free agent, signed his one-year contract Wednesday.
“Malcom is a young guy who stepped in and made some plays for us last season,” General Manager A.J. Smith said. “He’s got good size and speed. We believe he can continue to help us.”
The highlight of Floyd’s 2006 season came during a thrilling 49-41 over Cincinnati in Week 10. The former Wyoming Cowboy caught five passes for 109 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown pass. His 6-5 frame also came in handy in a Week 4 win in Pittsburgh when he hauled in a touchdown pass in the back of the end zone.
After spending the majority of two seasons on the Chargers’ practice squad, Floyd made the 53-man roster in 2006 and flashed at times. He finished the year with 15 catches for 210 yards and three touchdowns. He gradually earned more and more playing time as the season progressed before an ankle injury sidelined him in early December. He finished the season on injured reserve.
Floyd also spent brief stints on the Bolts’ active roster in 2005 and 2004. In the 2004 regular-season finale, he hauled in his first touchdown catch, which was also the first touchdown pass of Philip Rivers’ professional career.
Floyd is the third of the Chargers’ six exclusive rights free agents to sign their tender. Offensive tackle Cory Lekkerkerker and wide receiver Greg Camarillo signed on Friday. Defensive tackle Ryon Bingham, linebacker Marques Harris and defensive end Derreck Robinson have yet to ink their deals.
