Highlights from Week 3 against Seattle

  • Darren Sproles rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown in the first half...it included runs of 24, 20 and 16 yards...his one-yard plunge in the second quarter tied the game at 7-7...he went over 100 yards in the third quarter, finishing the game with 102 yards on 13 carries (7.8 avg.).
  • Vincent Jackson set up the Chargers’ first touchdown of the game with a 59-yard catch on a second-and-19 play...on the Bolts’ next drive, Jackson had two third-down catches, an 11-yarder on third-and-three and a 14-yarder on third-and-five to set up a 40-yard field goal for Nate Kaeding.
  • Derek Smith helped set up the field goal drive...after the Chargers scored the game-tying touchdown, Smith’s five-yard tackle for loss on second down led to a Seattle three-and-out...the Chargers took the lead with Kaeding’s field goal on the ensuing drive...after the field goal, fellow linebacker Tim Dobbins delivered a crushing open-field hit on Jordan Kent during the kickoff return.
  • Quentin Jammer ended the first half with a nice play, breaking up a deep pass intended for Seattle’s Logan Payne at the Chargers’ 15-yard line.
  • Mike Scifres buried a pair of punts inside Seattle’s 10-yard line, including one that was downed at the four-yard line and another which was fair caught at the nine.
  • Malcom Floyd had three catches for 37 yards, but that didn’t include his two biggest plays of the night...late in the fourth quarter, Floyd drew a 51-yard pass interference penalty in the end zone, setting the Chargers up with a first-and-goal at the Seattle one-yard line...three plays later, Jacob Hester scored and the Chargers were within 17-16...instead of going for the tie, Head Coach Norv Turner opted for the two-point conversion and Billy Volek hit Floyd on a fade for the two-point conversion and the lead at 18-17.
  • Brian Bonner sealed the victory with an interception, his first of the preseason.

The Matchup

The two-time defending AFC West Champion San Diego Chargers will return to Qualcomm Stadium to renew their rivalry with the Seattle Seahawks before a national-television audience on Monday, Aug. 25 on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. PDT.

The Series

Former AFC West foes, the Chargers and Seahawks are meeting in the preseason for just the ninth time, with Seattle leading the series, 5-3. That includes a 24-16 win in the preseason opener for both teams in 2007. For more than 20 years, both teams resided in the AFC West, until Seattle moved to the NFC West in 2002. They’ve met 48 times in the regular season. Seattle also leads that series, 25-23, though the Chargers won the last game, 20-17, in dramatic fashion in 2006. Vincent Jackson caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Philip Rivers with just 29 seconds left in the fourth quarter to lift the Bolts to victory.
