The Chargers finished their 2007 draft with one more linebacker by taking Florida’s Brandon Siler in the seventh round with the 240th choice overall.

Siler, a 6-foot-1, 241-pounder, was ranked among the nation’s top inside linebackers before a knee bruise hampered his play late in the 2006 season and hurt his draft status. He declared himself eligible for the draft after his junior year.

“He felt he accomplished everything he could at Florida,” Chargers assistant general manager Buddy Nix said. “He won a national champion, he’s been a starter and he’s been a leader on the team. I’m sure he expected to be drafted the first day. He wasn’t and was disappointed. But he was excited when we talked and we’re excited about getting him. He supplies us depth. He’ll make our team or make guys in front of him better.”

Siler was a Freshman All-American and the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year as a true freshman in the 2004 season. He started six games and finished with 77 tackles and two sacks.

He was a second-team All-SEC pick in 2006 when he was second on the team with 77 tackles, three sacks and 10 tackles for a loss.

Similar to last year’s draft when Iowa State inside linebacker Tim Dobbins was a rookie as a fifth-round pick, Nix said the Chargers liked Siler “for his nasty streak.“

Silver finished his three-year college career with 31 starts in 37 games, 218 tackles, nine sacks and 28½ tackles for a loss.
